1/Dear School Boards Who Need a Mask Off-Ramp,

Here are some "Don't Miss" features of the CDC school mask guidance that help.

First, indoor masking for ages 2 & up is RECOMMENDED - not required - for the unvaccinated.
2/CDC uses the phrase "may opt to" in reference to admins who want to "make mask use universally required".

Note this comes AFTER saying indoor/outdoor masking for unvaxed is RECOMMENDED

We then see a list of unsubstantiated, data-bereft validations that can be used as excuses
3/ What we're seeing in some places is the use of the Excuse List as reasons a district can't or shouldn't make masking a choice.

But the CDC isn't saying these are reasons to mandate masks - just reasons that a district might want a universal masking policy

See the diff?
4/Don't misunderstand me:

The CDC is wrong to keep pretending cloth stops airborne, aerosolized respiratory viruses

And wrong to ignore/deny the natural immunity that ~30M+ kids & teens have acquired.

But if they had the data to show masks work, they wouldn't say "recommended"
5/ Even schools that adopt universal masking are told to make exceptions under ADA & workplace safety issues.

This does NOT mean you relegate those kids outdoors on a bench, like @Naperville203 did to @gracialivie's daughter. #epicfail
6/Elsewhere in the document, the CDC says "localities might implement fewer COVID-19 prevention strategies," which is them saying, "We have no real control over schools."

The "one at a time removal" is, again, a "should" vs a "must." The discretion is yours.
7/ For a larger K12 district in a metro area, @CUSD200 did a nice job last week, reading between the lines like I just did, to devise a CDC-aware plan & make masks optional.

This isn't reckless. It's savvy. medium.com/district-200-n…
8/ We see some other Chicagoland K12 districts in Illinois like @d202schools & @Geneva304 following suit.

Others, like @sdu46, misstating what the CDC has said and rejecting the off-ramp for elementary kids.
9/ And here's a one HS-only district @ETHSWildkits - which has a racially-diverse student body - teeing up for a system that all-but-forces teens to be overtly branded by medical decision.

Utterly untenable & inequitable.
@ETHSWildkits 10/ COVID is a seasonal, endemic virus that presents a near-zero risk for severe outcome to most kids -- as I wrote about this week via Substack, linked here woodhouse.substack.com/p/a-one-week-v…

I urge you to show gratitude & courage by making masks optional for all.

P.S. Good rule of thumb in this or any crisis:

Whatever CPS does, do the opposite

Starting Aug 2, University of Illinois is requiring students without a university-verified Vaccination Record Card to "test & receive negative results EVERY OTHER DAY to maintain compliance & building access." [emphasis mine] covid19.illinois.edu/health-and-sup…

This is the school that spent $22M on saliva testing its students & staff. Avg student was tested over 100x last year. Athletes more.

6,800 "cases".

That's ~$3,200/positive test. 🤡
U of I was also the school that lied about being under an EUA.

FDA called their bluff, which put a wrench in the Governor's plans to expand the text to Illinois K12 schools. chicagotribune.com/coronavirus/ct…

Looks like @DuPageHD is "strongly recommending" school districts start the year requiring masks for all non-vaxed people age 2+. dupagehealth.org/DocumentCenter…

Agency makes baseless claims about how unvaxed people wearing masks reduces transmission.

No data cited.

Of course. ImageImage
Goes without saying, but "unvaccinated people" include students & teachers who have natural immunity through prior infection & t-cell reactivity.

As for "reducing the need for quarantining," why are exposure quarantines a "need" at all?

Time to end that senseless practice.
To date, there have been zero COVID deaths under age 20 in the county (out of ~240K in age group)

Total hosp among age 0-19 since March 2020 = less than 300. No indication if these were kids & teens hosp FOR Covid or w/it. ImageImage

.@MartyMakary pulls no punches and minces no words in this truth-bomb laden @WSJ OpEd about the abject data & information failures of the CDC, especially with regard to COVID-19 & children. Take note @AmerAcadPeds wsj.com/articles/cdc-c…
I'm with @MartyMakary

The CDC has 21,000 employees, yet they can't report the basic stats on the (very low) number of 335 pediatric deaths from/with COVID.

Why is that?
"Hospitals routinely test patients being admitted for other complaints even if there’s no reason to suspect they have C19. An asymp child who tests pos after being injured in a bicycle accident would be counted as a 'Covid hospitalization.'"

Adults too.

1/ IL State BOE has sent a ridiculous letter to @redhillcusd10, saying the district is now "on probation" for allegedly exhibiting "deficiencies that present a health hazard" to kids & teachers, by making masks optional

ZERO chance this would stand up in court. 🧵 ImageImage
2/ If @redhillcusd10 is creating a "health hazard" by not forcing kids to cover their faces with cloth (which doesn't stop viruses)...

...then so are 7 states that now don't permit local jurisdictions to mandate masks in schools - & 26 states that leave it to local decision Image
3/ Forced masking in IL schools is only hanging on by the thread of the Gov's 17x, illegally-reissued 30-day EO, which expires June 28th - & will likely be renewed tomorrow

Legislature MIA
Judiciary 😴

“Nearly six in 10 U.S. adults (57%) believe employees should be required to wear a mask when working at an on-site work location, even after being vaccinated for C19, [per] results from the latest American Staffing Association Workforce Monitor survey.” curated.tncontentexchange.com/partners/pr_ne…
“70% of Blacks/African-Americans and 64% of Hispanics/Latinos believe employees should be required to wear a mask when working at an on-site work location, even after being vaccinated for Covid-19, compared with 50% of Whites/Caucasians”

Wow 😞
“While two in three U.S. adults (66%) believe employees have a right to know if their co-workers have been vaccinated against Covid-19, a majority (60%) also say their personal vaccine status is no one's business but their own.”

Anyone know why this was deleted?

Was it the false claim that Delta is “deadlier”? Image
On a related note, why hasn't this tweet been deleted - or flagged as misleading?
