STARTING GOAT FARMING.

SELECTING OF GOATS

The biggest blunder you can ever make in livestock keeping is choosing the wrong genetics, whether you are in milk production or meat production. If you choose the wrong genetics you have failed before starting
Its important to learn the Art of selecting the Right animal fit for your purpose. if it milk then goat breeds like Saanen, Toggenburg, nubian & Alpine are best, if its for slaughter then borana/somali goats & boer/savanna/Kalahari red are best. But start with native breeds.
When selecting goat for slaughter we look at morphological traits that is the size, shape & structure of an animal. By observation look at the coat of the animal, it should look smooth ,no wounds, the hair should not look rough or sign of hair loss. See images of sick goat skin.
The front legs should look straight , but the hind leg should have a smooth curve and not straight legs. When the back legs too straight that not good, it is called posted legs. See image to be understanding how front & hind legs should look like.
The goat should not have knocking legs/knees.
The goats should have all four healthy limbs and no deformities on his legs
The Doe / female goats should have a pair of healthy udders, no deformities or sweelings or cases of one udder being bigger than the other and they must be symmetrical
The male goats should have a pair of big healthy testicles, symmetrical & avoid situation where the goat have one testicle or or one testicle is bigger than the other or testicle with extreme splitting in the middle, or extremly small. The testicle should not go beyond the knees.
The goats should have a big chest, wide thighs, wide ribs area showing its capacity to carry kids comfortable . Distance from one hind legs to another to be wide, with a straight back and a smooth inclination on its butt about 25° .
Check the eyes to know if the goat have internal parasites. You can easily detect anemia via the eyes . You can use the famacha which shows different eyes pigmentations where deep pink means goat is healthy and pale pink reveals signs of anemia.
The goats should be active not sleepy & not unease and scratching itself all the time because those are signs of parasites on the goat. Watch the goat poop , the droppings should be separate hard lumps , if the poop is watery or bonded together without lumps then the goat is sick
If the goat is covered with watery poop on her hind legs and anus then thats a sign of diarrhea dont buy such goats. At last know to identify age of goats to avoid buying old unproductive goats . You can identify goat age using Goats teeth. See image below
Avoid high breeds at all cost . Always go for pure breeds, because they have a higher hybrid vigor than hybrids. Then you can introduce a different breed later and cross with your goats to get a hybrid. When you cross two pures the F1(first generation) is born better than parents

UNDERSTANDING AN ADULT EQUVALENT (AE) & ITS APPLICATION.

An Adult Equivalent is a unit of measure or estimate used to calculate the feed intake of animals in different classes and sizes bu reducing them into a common unit for easy comparison ,
Lets say you have a herd of cattle, which are of mixed breeds and different sizes, calculating the feed intake base on each type of animals will be stressfull, time consuming and unrealistic so a common denominator is used to make work easier its like an average weight.
1 Adult Equivalent is usually estimated to be between 450-500 .
Some bookts say 450 some 500. But remember its an estimate and its not necessarily constant since it can change with weight gain of herd, so we usually aim for the higher side on the current herd .

Let's talk about sustainability in livestock production focusing on selection & breeding.

A sustainable breeding strategy target the environment & production

See the best breeding strategies ever that produced a useful and sustainable hybrid.
Famers in arid North Australia tried to keep a high milk producing freshian cow because he wanted more, but freshian are not adapted to the heat stress environment they had problems with mastitis and tropical diseases. The solution was a cross between freshian & Sahilwa
Freshian.
Traits:
-High milk yield
-Big size
-Poor resistance to tropical diseases & heat stress

Sahilwa:
-An indigenous breed with origin traced to punjabi region btwn indian & Pakistan
- The best milk producers in the Zebus breeds
-Disease and heat resistance
-Medium body

FOR THE LOVE OF FARMING. PART VII
FORMULATING FEED RATION FOR BEEF CATTLES.

THE PEARSON SQUARE METHOD
I run out of room space to add tweet theifore I transferred the last portion of the calculation to this final PART VIII Lecture. see continuation
Take the remaining Protein of 11.84% draw a square box with two diagnose lines, place the 11.84 in the box then place the CP of each food stuff on the upper & lower left side & subtract diagonally the middle value as below image show. Add the value on the right & convert to % .
See attached Picture of how it will look like then follow below calculation and instructions as a guide .

CP
51.7 - 11.84 = 39.86
9 - 11.84 = 2.84 (If the Value is negative ignore it )

FOR THE LOVE OF FARMING. PART VI
FORMULATING FEED RATION FOR BEEF CATTLES.

HOW TO CALCULATE RATIONS..
1. Decide on the type of feed stuffs to use - (alfalfa hay, desmodium, soya, maize, etc). Choise should be based on availability and consistency in supply when required.
2. Find out the nutrient content of the feed stuff. Estimates are available in the internet but always take a small sample to laboratory for confirmation that means if you prepared 500kg of feed send 1/2 a kg sample to a lab , check in net for accredited testing labs .
If you are using ready made feed its easier, just read the nutrient contents at the back of the feed bag.

Now, we use 3 tools in formulating rations:
1. Crude protein -CP
2. Total digestible Nutrient - TDN
3. weight of animal .
4. Dry matter %.

FEED RATION FORMULATION FOR BEEF CATTLE.

Crude Fiber - this is very important in ruminants animals to prevent stomach problem like acidosis (stomach gas/ bloating).

Crude fiber affects bulk and fill and as a result also digestibility.
When talking of Crude fiber you must understand these two terms. ADF & NDF.

Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF ) - This is the least digestible part of an animal usually the cellulose. ADF is used to calculate total energy in feed stuff, and it is inversely proportion to energy.
ADF is inversely proportional to Energy meaning the higher the ADF the higher the undigestiblity of a feed material and the more the undigestiblity of a feed material the lower the nutrient in it as a result the lower the energy.

Therefore ADF should be low to have high energy.

THE LOVE OF FARMING. PART IV
FEED RATION FORMULATION FOR BEEF CATTLE.

Let talk about PROTEIN.
Protein in animals can be sourced from two sources:
1. Organic: legumes grasses and forages , oil seed cakes .

2. Inorganic sources - Non Protein Nitrogen (NPN) eg. Urea.
Organic sources are the main protein sources and the inorganic NPN is a supplemental source if it is used in excess it causes poisoning.

During digestion of protein there are two terms that are commonly used: Rumen degradable protein & Rumen undegradable or bypass protein.
The protein that is digested in the rumen and consumed by rumen microbes to manufacture rumen microbial protein are called Rumen degraded proteins (RDP) , but some of the protein is not digested in the rumen but it goes straight to the small intestine without passing Abomasum.
