⏰⏰Attention⏰⏰

We want to alert you to one of the largest operational blunders in Nevada education history…

And what it means for our kids!

Thread 1/?
#NVed
2/?
When Jara's contract was renewed & he said we need to focus on stability, did anybody tell him what that means?

Because CCSD just lost more principals & admin last school year than ever!

Smashing the previous record set the prior year under Supt Jara!
3/?
2019-20 school year saw a record number of administrators leave CCSD.

Jara’s response… let’s PAY more to leave.

Last year CCSD paid for principals/administrators to retire early, and they took the money & ran!

Just how bad was this operational move...
4/?

A week before school started, 8/2/2021,
the School Directory on CCSD’s website showed that there were still 77 Principal and Assistant Principal vacancies.
5/?
In early 2021, we showed school admin was the largest draw on classroom teachers.

In other words, the teacher shortage is amplified by a lack of external recruitment of administrators.

What happened after CCSD paid administrators to leave?
6/?
We’ve been tracking staffing vacancies in CCSD over this last month.

As administrator vacancies have been going down this month, teacher/licensed vacancies have been going up. And continue to rise!

It gets worse...
7/?
In the middle of a national teacher shortage, Jara decided to SPEND MONEY to MAKE IT WORSE.

Worse for our leaders.
Worse for our teachers.
Worse for our kids!

#TeacherShortageOnSteriods
8?
Maybe, we've got it all wrong.

Maybe paying admin to retire early was actually a focused effort to get rid of ineffective leaders and break up the good ol’ boy network.

Maybe they were all bad leaders.

Let’s investigate!
9/?
The performance framework rates schools on a scale of 1-100 & designates a Star Rating (y-axis in chart)

We’ve created a risk rating on the x-axis
Farther to the right = more barriers to education (poverty, language, transiency)

Due to COVID, 2018-19 is the most recent data
10/?
Each dot represents an elementary school in Nevada

The blue line is the avg performance for a school in NV given the school’s risk rating

Dots above the blue line are beating the avg.

The farther above the blue line a dot is the more they are outperforming similar schools
11/?
Here’s the performance of some of the principals CCSD just paid to retire early

All 10+ years experience as a principal

All run schools SIGNIFICANTLY OUTPERFORMING their peers

Doesn’t look like CCSD focused on removing bad leaders

Let's take a closer look at Lake ES...
12/?
Lake ES:
- 100% FRL
- Double CCSD’s ELL rate

Lake was SIGNIFICANTLY OUTPERFORMING comparable schools across NV!

Last year was Mr. McHargue’s 20th yr as principal at Lake ES

We PAID for the LONGEST SERVING elementary principal in CCSD to LEAVE!!!

In Middle School...
13/?
Ann Schiller was the principal of Fremont MS for a decade.

100% FRL
Over 1 in 4 ELL

Compared to similar schools, Fremont was the highest performing MS in CCSD.

CCSD just paid for their HIGHEST PERFORMING Middle School principal to LEAVE!!!
14/?
Even though parents & staff love their school & don’t trust the District, CCSD is being run like the opposite were true

CCSD is NOT listening to parents & school staff.

Now there are:
- Growing teacher/licensed staff separations
- Record principal/admin separations
15/?

CCSD is driving out some of our LONGEST-SERVING, HIGHEST-PERFORMING school leaders when we need them most!

Decades building trust & respect in their communities.
Decades beating the odds & improving kids' lives.
16/16
This is a call to action:

- Transparency around all staffing data; standing Board agenda item

- Accountability for the Superintendent around staffing (it's in Focus 2024)

- Value community input & bring back the Districtwide Survey (it's the law)
Stay tuned for our next investigation in the coming week.

And be sure to read the previous call to action on CCSD’s teacher shortage:

The Twitter account for the Superintendent of the 5th largest school district in the US allegedly posted a crude, misogynistic message.

We don’t know if it’s real, fake, or a hack.

But we’re good at going through data, so let’s review what’s out there…

5:41am @Kbelknap822 takes a screenshot of the tweet that was posted 20 seconds earlier

25 minutes later, at 6:06 AM, Kenny posted the screenshot

Seems unlikely he thought to forge ALL those details

But hard to say for sure🤷‍♂️ Image
@Kbelknap822 3/?

If the screenshot is real, it seems there are 2 options…

Either somebody without access hacked the account and posted the message

OR

Somebody with authorized access to the Superintendent account posted the message Image

🔎Let's Take a Look🔎

How bad have things gotten in CCSD that the Speaker of the State Assembly is calling on Superintendent Jesus Jara to resign?

Let's look at the latest data fiasco.
No, not the data breach…

🧵1/? Image
2/?

CCSD just published the teacher vacancies report for last school year.

It reports that CCSD averaged 1,583 vacancies for just general fund teacher/licensed staff positions in schools.

That’s a whopping 12.3% vacancy rate!!! 🤯 Image
3/?

Here are the teacher vacancies CCSD reported for the last 5 years:

2019: 275
2020: 686
2021: 824
2022: 903
2023: 1,583

This is what CCSD reported.
We have done no calculations to aggregate these numbers.
We only put them in a chart. Image

🎄Merry Excusemas🎄

If ifs & buts were candy & nuts, every day would be Christmas for Jara apologists.

"…but COVID"
"...but historically"
"…but but but"

This thread is too long, but let’s get at it…

“…but COVID”

Yes, reading scores went down for the whole country.

Nevada’s scores dropped DOUBLE the national average, AFTER closing a massive & persistent learning gap

How much of that is attributable to CCSD… Image
3/?

“...but everyone experienced learning loss”

CCSD’s drop in 4th grade reading was over DOUBLE what it was for:

- National public-school average
- Large urban district average
- The rest of Nevada

Yes, everybody had a setback, but it was NOT the same Image

🔥Results Are In🔥

CCSD's Accountability data was released today!

Let's do a quick review of the results & school star ratings...

2/?
CCSD posted its LOWEST EVER reading proficiency rates on the SBAC

Not surprising... over last couple years:

- Drove out 1,000s of teachers
- Rampant vacancies
- Paid experienced leaders to leave
- Community trust broken
- Teachers & Principals calling for Supt to be fired Image
3/?

Only 1 in 5 kids headed to high school are proficient in math

Not surprising... over last couple years:

- Drove out 1,000s of teachers
- Rampant vacancies
- Paid experienced leaders to leave
- Community trust broken
- Teachers & Principals calling for Supt to be fired Image

💡We may have finally figured out how CCSD produced this completely inaccurate & irresponsible data point.

They have once again shown they have no competence in working with data or communicating with the public.

Read the thread for details…

2/?

Here are the official grad rates for the Class of 2022 for all of the high schools in North Las Vegas.

Depending on which schools you include the actual grad rate is between 74% - 85%.

So how did CCSD come up with 51% ???
3/?

You need to add over 1,600 students to NLV’s student count without adding ANY graduates to get the total overall grad rate down to 51.5%

Let’s put that into context…

🚧WRONG WAY🚧
No more excuses!

Read the whole thread to understand how CCSD has been driving #NVed in the WRONG direction

We'll review where we've come from and how we've gotten all turned around
- New national data
- Updated teacher exodus data
And More!

This morning’s NY Times referenced data from The Educational Opportunity Project

They've charted the change in average reading scores since the pandemic

Each dot is a school district

Higher dot, reading performance improved.
Lower dot, reading performance worsened. Image
3/?

The highlighted bubbles represent the 10 largest districts in the US (NY did not have data)

Higher bubbles = Students have done better in reading since the pandemic

Lower bubbles = Students have done worse in reading since the pandemic

Guess which one is Clark County… Image
