This thread is how Christian saints crushed and destroyed Hindu idols in Armenia in 304 CE and converted the people to Christianity.
This is the work of Gregory the Illuminator, who served as the first head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
1/n
Where is Armenia? It's located near the Caspian Sea, but is landlocked by Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. See map for the exact location of Armenia.
How did Hindu religion and culture reach Armenia and when?
2/n
The existence of an ancient Indian colony in Armenia is well-known to Armenian scholars, but not known in India. This information comes from a Syrian person named Zenob, who was the companion of St. Gregory, the Illuminator on an idol-smashing tour through Armenia in 304 CE.
3/n
This information about the atrocities on the Hindus comes from Zenob's work on History of Taron (modern Muş Province in Turkey). Let's see how these Hindus arrived in far-away Armenia. These Hindus reached Armenia around 149 BCE. The Armenian king was then Valarsaces.
4/n
Two Indian chiefs named Gisane (Kisan?) and Demetr (Debmitra?) fled westwards from India after an unsuccessful rebellion. In the period 149-127 BCE, the Sakas and the Greeks invaded the Indus Valley and North-Western Punjab. They fled with their people and arrived at Armenia
5/n
King Valarsaces gave them the canton of Taron for residence. There the Hindus founded a town called Vishap (literal translation Nagpur, or town of the snake). The Hindus set up the idols and murtis in the neighboring town of Ashtishat (ruins of pagan Hellenistic temples)
6/n
15 years later, the king killed the chiefs but their three sons Kuaur (Kumar?), Melted (Mahato, Mahut?) and Horian continued the lienage. They created a temple for the two idols Gisane (Kisan) and Demetr (Devamitra) on the banks of Euphrates where the Hindus worshipped.
7/n
The Hindu community flourished in the next 300-350 years. The descendants of the sons were the temple priests, 12 villages were assigned for temple service and maintenance.
Then in 304 CE, Gregory the Illuminator appeared for demolishing the idolatry.
8/n
The Hindus took up arms to defend their temple and idols, so Gregory had to flee to a nearby castle. Both sides got reinforcements and in the battles, the chief priest and his son were killed. The Hindus lost but they pleaded to save the Murtis.
9/n
6 priests fell at the temple door, another 1 died in torture without giving the treasury of the gods. The Christians then demolished the copper idols, 12 and 15 cubits high (1 cubit roughly 20 inch). The temples were burnt to the ground. There Gregory erected a church.
10/n
A cross marked the location of the Kisan idol. 5000 Hindus were forced into baptism, 438 Hindus who resisted conversion had their heads shaved and transported to a faraway holdout near Caspian Sea, after which they were unheard of.
11/n
If you search for Gregory the Illuminator in @Wikipedia, you will find this text, "He was a religious leader who is credited with converting Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301".
These were some of the incidents in that conversion process.
12/n
This entire anecdote comes from Zenob's own writings, who was an eye-witness to this incident. The write-up and translation can be found in p. 309 of Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain 1904.

Tagging so more people can read about this.

Kayasthas are a notable caste in Indian society. Famous people from this caste are Swami Vivekananda, Rajendra Prasad, Subhas Chandra Bose, and many others. The Kayasthas claim origin from Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Shudras. This thread will cover all these.
1/n
In historical documents, Kayasthas were typically known for record-writing and bureaucratic positions. Bilhana and Kalhana mention different positions with Kayastha suffix in their writings of Vikramankadevacharita and Rajatarangini.
2/n
But what Varna does Kayastha belong to? There exist historical inscriptions wherein Kayasthas claim origin from 3 different varnas of Brahmin, Kshatriya and Shudra. This will further highlight the fact that varna and caste are dissimilar constructs.

India had a long trade and travel relation with Ptolemaic Egypt, a Greek kingdom in Egypt founded around 300 BCE. Inscriptions in temple ruins still carry Indian/Hindu names there. Image shows an estimate of Ptolemaic kingdom.
1/n
This inscription is found in the temple of Seti I at Khanais that falls on the road between the cities of Edfu and Mersa Alam. See map for exact location of the temple ruins. Google maps don't record the exact location
2/n
This temple has lots of inscriptions in both Greek and Hieroglyphics. See the entrance to the temple and some of the inscriptions in the rock cut caves.

This guy's name was Vasco da Gama, who was the 1st European to reach India. Historical texts told us how great an explorer he was. Yet, many don't know how much brutalities and atrocities he committed on reaching India.
1/n Image
Vasco da Gama was the captain-major of the Portuguese fleet in 1504. This was the 2nd trip of Gama to India, the 1st being in 1497. He claimed the king of Portugal to be the lord of seas and destroyed vessels with Indian people off the coast of India.
2/n
Then on Oct 29th, at Calicut, he massacred native fishermen of the city. Sewell writes, "seizing the inoffensive native fishermen in the port, eight hundred of whom he massacred in cold blood under circumstances of brutal atrocity."

How the British enforced the rigidity of the caste and often manufactured occupational castes during Census is evident from British census officers' writings. Here's Middleton, in the Punjab Census of 1921, "these castes have been largely manufactured and
almost entirely preserved as separate castes by the British Government..we pigeon-holed everyone by caste and if we could not find a true caste for them labelled them with the name of an hereditary occupation."
He further went on to add
"We deplore the caste system and its effect on social and economic problems, but we are largely responsible for the system which we deplore". Caste in earlier days was only rigid among the higher castes, but after the British, it crystallized among all sections of society. Image

I had written earlier about history of caste in India. In this thread, I will show how caste-like elements were present in other parts of the world. Occupational, birth-based or endogamic groups are not unique to India.
1/n

In this quest, I will describe primitive societies in Egypt, Western Asia, China, Japan, America, Rome and tribal Europe. Hindu society is always criticized for its caste-like segregation. Let's see how society developed all over the world.

In ancient Egypt, there were 3 classes - land-owners, serfs, and slaves. The first 2 owned land whereas the slaves didn't.
