One of the main reasons many Alberta nurses are willing to strike is that AHS wants to take away the role of a charge nurse. They want it to be a charge person who doesn’t have to be a registered nurse. It can be a janitor, pharmacist, occupational therapist.

It’s ludicrous.
No where in the world does it without a charge nurse. If I as a floor nurse don’t know how to do a nursing skill, it’s the charge nurse that is a mentor for everyone on the unit. Air traffic control if you will. That policy will affect patient safety.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for more work/life balance and vacations.

Three week vacations anyone could use to unwind and take care of mental health etc.
And if I were a person who was selfish, jealous, and concerned with my own exceptionalism, I would point out that as a nurse & physician couple who the AB govt has vilified as privileged and overpaid, we have never been allowed 3 weeks off together.
Residency programs in Alberta do not allow you to take more than 2 weeks off of a rotation.

And yes my opinion is that residency programs should offer more downtime, not that politicians necessarily deserve less.
