A thread of some interesting studies about the effects of religiosity on political & personal behavior:
Many studies have correlated religiosity and social conservatism. Here are a few:

A simple one: Just 4% of atheists voted for Donald Trump in 2016: baylor.edu/baylorreligion…
This correlation between religiosity and economical & social rightism holds across nearly the entire world:

Gaskins 2013: religiosity correlates with conservatism (on left-right self-placement, divorce, euthanasia, abortion, suicide, and homosexuality): sci-hub.st/10.1017/S00223…
Cingranelli 2019: in 1981-2015, higher religiosity (how often attend religious services) correlates with worse women's rights (right to vote, run for office, proportion offices held by women) and worse protections for female domestic violence victims: muse.jhu.edu/article/730069/
Cingranelli 2019 also find that religiosity correlates with authoritarianism -- lower respect for human rights (free assembly & association, free & fair elections, free speech): sci-hub.st/10.1353/hrq.20…
Why is this? Religiosity appears to correlate with more-conservative mentalities:

Hannover 2018: among German adolescents, religiosity correlates with sexism, fundamentalism, right-wing authoritarianism, and social dominance orientation: sci-hub.st/10.3389/fpsyg.…
Religion also seems to justify the status quo -- "divine right" or "opiate of the masses"

Shepherd 2016: among the religious who believe the USA is in decline, belief that God has a plan for the USA increases support for existing political systems: sci-hub.st/10.1111/pops.1…
The common cause for these traits may be that religious people think more "intuitively" (fast, unsystematic) while less religious people think more "analytically" (slow, systematic): Zuckerman 2013: sci-hub.st/10.1177/108886…>
This greater reliance on analytic thinking may explain atheists overrepresentation in higher ed.

In 2009:
~4% of US residents are atheists
~40% of US scientists are atheists (~10x higher)
~70% of US philosophers are atheists (~20x)
pewforum.org/2009/11/05/sci…
psychologytoday.com/blog/logical-t…
This fact may have large effects on religion and scientific performance: Stoet 2017 found that more-religious countries have significantly worse scientific education performance; this effect is partially explained by HDI levels: sci-hub.st/10.1016/j.inte…
Religion certainly provides comfort and wholeness to many people. However, I believe the evidence shows that higher religiosity also brings social & economic conservatism, worse scientific performance, and weaker models of thought.

New blogpost:

Socialists will overwhelmingly vote for Kamala Harris. 🧵 Image
Most polls only let voters identify as "liberal", "moderate", or "conservative". To know how socialists will vote, that's worthless.

Last month, University of New Hampshire added "socialist" to their list.

About 90% of socialist likely voters will vote for Kamala in ME, NH, VT: Image
The same rate holds across the US.

In August, Fairleigh Dickinson University also added "socialist" to their ideology list.

The result? Again, about 90% of self-identified socialist registered voters will vote Kamala. Image

The "American College of Pediatrics" (ACPeds) posted another report against trans healthcare.

You're going to hear a lot about ACPeds from social conservatives, like Fox News and Jimmy Dore.

Anyone who seriously cites the ACPeds is a hack. Thread: 🧵

In 2002, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a report documenting that gay & straight parents had similar outcomes for their children.

Conservatives got pissed. They created the "American College of Pediatrics" (ACPeds) to oppose gay marriage and gay adoption. Image
Down to its name, the ACPeds was an obvious attempt to launder conservative schlock as if most medical professionals supported it.

The ACPeds took every standard conservative position:
- Against gay marriage
- Against abortion
- For beating children
- For sexual abstinence Image

This shit drives me up the wall:

Both anti-electoral leftists AND anti-leftist contrarians like Wu ignore that progressives in blue states have created public health insurance options!

2 already have them (WA CO) and 4 passed laws authorizing them (NV ME MN NM). Image
Progressives and leftists didn't "stop thinking about universal healthcare" -- in half a dozen states, we took the first step toward UHC in half a century!

Come on, man!

Image
Image
The 3 earlier plans are neoliberal: Public-funded but private-run.

They are mild successes. They reduced the real cost of health insurance. They haven't come CLOSE to universal healthcare.

The 3 new plans are slated to be bigger, public-run, and integrated with Medicaid:

New article: 🧵

I am pleased to release a working version of my "Members of Leftist Organizations, 1848-2024" dataset.

It tells a story of the multiple rises & falls of the organized American left, spanning from social democrats to anarchists: Image
This is the first time such data has ever been compiled.

That's because the topic is messy and enormous. The data spans 176 years and ~250 notable organizations, using 2600 estimates from 1100 sources.

How messy? Here's what the data looks like without the 170 smallest orgs: Image
If you'd like to play with the data yourself, you're in luck.

You can use this interactive graph to plot just about anything you'd like.

Example: Want to focus on one or two groups? Easy as pie: socdoneleft.shinyapps.io/MemLeftOrg/

it's actually absurd that "Democrats don't pursue power, don't want to win, and don't have political beliefs" has somehow become Mainstream Leftist Thought

like, this idea just dissolves on contact with reality 🧵 Image
This idea often comes up around abortion

"It's all political theater, Democrats just use abortion to win, so they will never protect it"

If true, why have literally all Dem-run states actively expanded reproductive rights?

Are people just unaware of this fact? 🧵 Image
This idea often comes up around trans rights

"Democrats just scaremonger about trans rights to win, they don't actually care"

If true, why have 2/3 of Dem states legally enshrined gender-affirming healthcare (and a dozen other rights)?

Are people just unaware of this fact? 🧵

tankies are *already* calling Guyana a US puppet state that is "provoking" Venezuelan invasion
Image
Image
the "98%" figure is completely false -- currently, Guyana gets 50% of the profits and 2% of the revenue from the offshore drilling firms

Guyana is an extremely poor country with little leverage against megacorporations -- but it should fight for a better deal, as Brazil did! Image
last fun note here: the China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC), which is a state-owned enterprise, has a 25% stake in the productive oil field (Stabroek).

I'm glad that Exxon, Hess, and Xi Jinping can all work together to puppeteer Guyana! 🥰 Image
