From @tylercowen's recent @cowenconvos : "if I walk around Paris, London, New York, Dublin — almost any city you care to name — I see beautiful, older urban neighborhoods... But I don’t see newly created, wonderful, beautiful urban neighborhoods really anywhere. Why is that?"
"The French have an incredible culture, an amazing eye, highly sophisticated, maybe willing to sacrifice cheapness for beauty. Yet, they seem incapable of building new, beautiful neighborhoods, whether they’re walkable [or not]... They’re never beautiful. Nothing’s beautiful."
GLAESER: How about the parts of Barcelona that were built after the Olympics? That’s not a terribly unpleasant place.
COWEN:“Great to live in, not terribly unpleasant” is a wonderful description of it. That’s the best we can do? We’re so much wealthier. It’s crazy. I don’t get it
Interesting discussion about architecture, and a great point that whether you like some contemporary stand alone buildings or not, we are incapable of building nice new urban neighborhoods. Welcome to the team, @tylercowen
