SOMA is an interesting game about a lot of complicated transhumanist topics and the meaning and value of life and survival but the thing I keep taking away from it is :
Can we build an Omega space gun? I want one.
It's an underwater launch system for satellites and deep space probes!
It uses a long barrel from the bottom of the ocean, using magnetic propulsion to accelerate a launch vehicle to escape velocity before it reaches sea level.
It's powered by a geothermal energy plant on the bottom of the ocean, and it can launch cargo into orbit without needing a chemical rocket.
It's awesome.
And none of the problems faced in Soma: your terminal brain damage, the end of the world, the mad AI, zombies/robots, slow death of all humanity, and the inability to get a scope-creeped project released?

None of those were the fault of the space gun!
Apparently the space gun is 5 kilometers long. That's a lot of barrel and magnets
*bangs table*
SPACE GUN SPACE GUN SPACE GUN
I just want to launch 10 tonnes of cargo into space with no fuel required and powered by renewable energy, is that so wrong?
Imagine being able to launch a JWST and a half into orbit every day.
That'd be sweet
Which is one of the worldbuilding nitpick I have for SOMA. You don't build a space gun just to launch a new Direct TV satellite every couple years. Clearly you have some major investment into space travel that means it's worth building a launch system like this
And yet there's never a single mention of anybody living anywhere but on the earth's surface and the bottom-of-the-sea folks at Pathos 2
Just a single line of "The astronauts on the space station/Mars only had supplies for a year or two" would he enough
Also I'm slightly surprised they weren't able to deflect a comet. A space gun gives you launches so cheap you can afford a lot of a lot of missions to attempt deflection
But the story depends on it, so I can buy that they just failed to detect it until too late to really make a difference
To paraphrase somebody:
There are two kinds of civilizations in the galaxy:
1. Those who invest in early asteroid detection and deflection, and...
2. Those who only exist in ruins studied by #1
That's the part from Rendezvous with Rama that feels so real.
The first chapter explains that the Earth's asteroid survey detected Rama as it entered the solar system, and explains that we only have an asteroid warning system because we don't have a Venice anymore.
And we just gotta hope that we get a city-flattening warning shot, and not a dinosaur-killer headshot.
But you know what'd really help? A bunch of sky survey satellites! And you know what would be a great way to get them into orbit for cheap? AN OMEGA SPACE GUN!

The telephone was invented around 1876 and in 145 years since we've managed to make it able to do anything but transmit the human voice
I ordered some sandwiches earlier and got two calls about how they are out of and would I like to swap it for another ingredient? they've got and, and some.
I have no idea what is missing, off which sandwich, and what they are going to replace it with. I couldn't hear that part. I repeatedly said I couldn't hear them and asked again, but I didn't hear the responses

honestly the best, perhaps only, way I've found to manage having multiple bluetooth devices and a single pair of headphones that talks to all of them?

I turn off bluetooth on all the devices I don't want to use.
like I need to get in on a work call?
bluetooth->on
KVM to my home computer: bluetooth, off.
pick up my phone: bluetooth, off (WARNING YOU MAY NOW GET THE VIRUS)
pick up my work phone: bluetooth, off.
this is slightly annoying. but it seems to be the most reliable way

Sublime Text: perhaps the only program that lets you easily unlicense it, for some reason.
are you tired of having the commercial version?
do you miss the "hey register this please" nag popups?
WELL THEN YOU NEED TO DO HELP->UNLICENSE!
(the real reason you might need this feature, and why I just used it, is that if you need to upgrade your license you unlicense it first)

the internet is too small.
I was trying to find an image of a line from Red Dwarf: "Don't give me that Star Trek shit, it's too early in the morning!" and I google image searched (part of it), and got this result. Why is this annoying?
this image.
You see how it's got kinda ugly weird borders on the Impact font?

Yeah that's because I didn't have photoshop at the time and was making all my memes in Inkscape.
I MADE THAT MEME.
IN, LIKE, 2006. FOR 4CHAN.

You know, Star Trek TV shows went on a long hiatus between the end of Enterprise and the start of Discovery, and one thing I now realize I didn't miss during that sad period was CONSTANT GEEK ARGUMENTS ABOUT HOW MUCH STAR TREK SHOWS SUCK
I haven't started watching any of the New Trek yet but from what I've heard, I should avoid:

Discovery, because it sucks/isn't trek
Picard, because it sucks/isn't trek
And
Lower Decks, because it sucks/isn't trek
And it's not looking good for the other two or three ones on the way
