Yogi Aadityanath, UP's CM yesterday claimed - "Before 2017 was everyone able to get ration? Only those who used to say 'Abba Jaan' were digesting the ration." He LIED from the stage. My reporting from UP proves otherwise. A thread. Please stay with me.
Last year 5-year-old Sonia Kumari died in Agra, a district in Uttar Pradesh. Sonia born to 40-year-old Sheela and 50-year-old Pappu had reportedly gone without ration for 15 days before she died. Pertinent to mention that they are Hindus.
The neighbours who came to grieve with the family on the day of Sonia's death brought them cheap Parle G glucose biscuits, the only thing they ate in days. I should mention that this happened in 2020, four years after Yogi took oath as CM.
This is not the only Hindu family which suffered from severe hunger. When I visited Bojha Ram’s house, a man in his 70s, I saw him eating leftover chapati with sugar dissolved in water. His 60-year-old wife, Mala, the only breadwinner, was out looking for work.
A disabled mother of four, Baby Kumari, had not eaten anything for three days. She cooked some food she borrowed from the neighbours for the children but went without eating herself, she told me.
All these hunger stories are from 2020. In 2021 Guddi and her 5 children went hungry for 2 months in Aligarh of UP. The doctors who attended them said they were so weak that they could not walk.
Recently I reported how 38-year-old widow Tabbasum Nisha was struggling because of hunger. Just see how trolls target her just because of religion. Many said she should be given contraceptives instead of ration cards. Others said it was a conspiracy to legalise Rohingyas.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Poverty is the worst form of violence" and this violence is not communal. The story also mentions how there were many Hindu families who fear death from starvation.
For instance, when I visited Rani Devi’s shanty, she had nothing to eat except frozen fat and salt. The widow is responsible for feeding her three grandchildren. Her 14-year-old grandson is a rickshaw puller and the sole earner in the family. He earns between $4-5 a day.
Like Rani Devi, 60, Nuzat Bano, 22, too was unable to apply for a ration card at all because of the complex requirements of eligibility, such as a proof of residence, electricity bills and other documents. This is her 4-year-old daughter.
The cases in this story are from Delhi. But the situation is pretty much the same everywhere. Hunger does not see religion before targeting an empty stomach. aljazeera.com/news/2021/9/6/…

As Elections are here and Mr Modi is seeking a 3rd term, media and endless ads on TV are showing how PM single-handedly "developed" the nation. So here is a story:
In December, I found myself in Mr Modi's adopted villages in Varanasi. What I saw there, blew my mind.
A thread..
When Mr Modi assumed office 10 years back, he made all parliamentarians adopt villages in their own constituencies to make them "model villages." Modi himself adopted 8 villages in Varanasi.
Now I will tell you what happened to those villages.
Let's start with Jayapur, one of the 1st villages adopted by Modi. I am not going to lie, some quarters of the village seem fancy. But village's Harijan Basti, a segregated neighbourhood of lowered caste Hindus shows a different picture.
No housing. Useless toilets. Poor roads.

But read this story to understand what the BJP can do when you don't take your privacy seriously.

In the run-up to India’s massive elections, the Saral app — which has more than 2.9 million Google Play store downloads — has emerged as a key piece of technology in the BJP’s campaigning operations so much so that Amit Malviya called it an "ELECTION WINNING MACHINE."
Until recently, the Apple App Store listed Jarvis Consulting, a Mumbai-based political consulting firm, as the copyright holder of the App. It was removed shortly after we reached out for a comment. Jarvis Consulting did not respond to us.
🚨Scoop: Remember how in 2018, India's education minister said that he believed Indians were descendants of rishis rather than monkeys ?
Satyapal Singh had called Charles Darwin "scientifically wrong" and claimed "Nobody saw an ape turning into a man.” indianexpress.com/article/india/…
Satyapal had said : "Darwin’s theory is scientifically wrong and so, in schools and colleges it must be changed."
And guess what ?
By the 2021-2022 academic year, Darwin's theory was quietly removed from the examination syllabus for the students of Class 9 and Class 10.
By 2022-2023, the topic of evolution was completely purged from school textbooks, Al Jazeera has learnt.
From Bangalore, to Paris, to Berlin and finally in Delhi, nearly nine months of reporting for #storykillers is now published by Forbidden Stories and their partners.
Picking up where Lankesh left off, Forbidden Stories investigated Postcard News.
I found that in the years following Lankesh’s killing, Hegde grew closer to the BJP, co-founding a company that lists an active BJP advisor as a director.
India is one of the WORST countries concerning food insecurity in Asia. Only war-torn, Taliban-ruled Afghanistan suffers more than India, according to 2022's World Hunger Index. India slipped six places and ranked 107 of 121 countries on the 2022 index.
An alarming thread :
Indian government fails to recognise how alarming hunger is in India. In the Supreme court, the government said there were no starvation deaths in India, which is not correct.
Last year, this day, I was suspended from my work. Eventually, forced to resign because of a tweet. Even thinking about that day gives me shivers. But I cannot stop thinking about it - A dramatic, public and insulting exit. Many people thought that my career was over.
There was name calling, trolling, rape and murder threats. From money to shelter, I was struggling for everything in a pandemic. As my world turned upside down, only my work and my passion felt like a refuge. Here, is a thread of some stories that I have written so far.
This story documents the victims of trolling in a digitalised and polarised India.
