Today is the 15th anniversity of the mass shooting at Dawson College. The shooter used his legally-obtained Beretta Cx4 assault-style rifle. He killed Anastasia De Sousa dead and injured 19 others. #cdnpoli #Elxn44 1/
The event was shocking, not least of all because it occurred in Montreal, which had suffered through the 1989 École Polytechnique mass shooting. 2/
The Dawson College mass shooting was the third high-profile school shooting in Montreal since 1989, including an event at Concordia in 1992 in which a professor killed 4 people. 3/
The political cartoonist for the Montreal Gazette (@TerryMosher1) responded to the Dawson College mass shooting with this image: "Not again!" #cdnpoli #Elxn44 4/
In 2020 the Liberal government of @JustinTrudeau banned the Cx4 assault-style rifle used in the Dawson College mass shooting. Erin O'Toole repeatedly promised the gun lobby he would repeal this ban. #elxn44vote #Elxn44 #cdnpoli #Page90

There have long been cleavages in the gun community about what firearms should be available for use. Ex. In 1977 Jack O'Dette of the @ofah complained to the @CWF_FCF about a "generally poorer class" of hunters using M-1s and AR-15s. They were “making hunting a less safe sport” 1/
Jack O'Dette (1917-2005) possessed an M.Sc. from Queen's. He contributed to conservation efforts for decades. O’Dette served as president of @CWF_FCF and the @OHAF, and was a member of the Order of Canada. The @OFAH gives an award in his honour: 2/
O’Dette explained his concerns about hunters wanting military-style rifles. He wanted to "make hunting a safer sport, a more sportsmanlike sport." He wanted to "eliminate the radicals who give us the ‘black eye’." This meant using "conventional long guns.” 3/

In late 1933, Toronto was shocked by the shooting of John Copp, 22, at his parent's home. Copp was a medical student, a star football player, and Sunday school teacher. The burglar was armed with a .32 revolver, possibly stolen from a legal owner the night before the shooting. 1/
Copp was rushed to Wellesley Hospital, where surgeons, including Copp’s father, worked to save his life. However, the bullet had torn through Copp’s intestinal tract, stomach, and pancreas. Shot on Nov. 30, Copp died on Dec. 3. 2/
The murder was front page news in Toronto for weeks. The police, however, never solved the case despite a $5000 reward and a huge manhunt. The Globe reported that “every available man has been pressed into the search for the murderer of Copp.” 3/

Critics of Ottawa's new gun bill (#BillC21) are angry about the proposed ban on ‘airsoft’ rifles that look like real rifles. Airsoft guns shoot plastic projectiles at low velocities. They are often used in games similar to paintball. #cdnpoli 1/
An industry has grown up around airsoft, and the people that sell airsoft guns say the new legislation will harm their livelihoods. 2/…
Many airsoft gun designs are based on the shape of real firearms. For ex, lists many Airsoft guns described under the heading of “AR-15 platform”. See…. Here is one example. 3/

Those touched by gun violence have often been important advocates for gun control. Maggie Burtinshaw was one such advocate. In 1973 her son Edward, 20, was killed by a teenager who had hidden inside a department store to steal unlocked rifles after the store closed. #cdnpoli 1/
Burtinshaw began to call for stronger gun laws. She came under attack from the gun lobby: “The gun lobbyists try to make me sound like a grieving, emotional mother.” She noted that many in the gun community seemed overly influenced by American gun culture rhetoric. #guncontrol 2/
Burtinshaw started a petition demanding stronger gun laws, and organized a panel that proposed the licensing of all owners and dealers, stronger storage laws, and stiffer penalties for gun crimes. #cdnhist 3/

Conservative leadership candidate @PeterMacKay is promising he will weaken Canada’s firearm laws, but leaves the most important pledge he has made to the gun lobby out of his just released firearms platform. #cdnpoli #cpcldr #guncontrol 1/6
In his platform, MacKay promises to repeal Bill c-71 passed by the Liberals in 2019, which included provisions designed to strengthen background checks, record keeping, and gun transportation rules. He says he will replace it with something but provides no details. #cdnpoli 2/6
MacKay also promises to repeal the Order-in-Council issued after the #Portapique massacre by the federal government that prohibited a large number of mostly semi-automatic assault-style rifles, including the AR-15. #cdnpoli (image by @CH_Cartoon) 3/6

Last summer, 2 teenagers legally purchased an SKS semi-automatic rifle, killed 3 people & sparked a massive manhunt until they committed suicide. This was NOT the first time the SKS assault-style rifle had been used in criminal activity. Here are a few exs: #cdnhist #cdnpoli 1/
2017: Oscar Arfmann murdered Constable John Davidson with an SKS rifle in a parking lot in British Columbia #cdnpoli #guncontrol 2/
