On the subject of cabinet confidence. Under our Westminster system of government, cabinet ministers discuss matters of policy and implementation of same. It's meant to be a fulsome debate. Then, when a decision is taken, ministers are *jointly* responsible. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44
2/ This is so that citizens know who is accountable. There can't be one cabinet minister claiming that it was the other guy. They are jointly on the hook for decisions. The former AG has never had much of an idea what it means to be a cabinet minister. /3
3/ It does not mean taking notes of what other cabinet ministers say, it means to participate in an open, let-it-all-hang-out discussion and then get behind decisions that are taken. /4
4/ Undermining cabinet confidence is the same as undermining our system of government. It's dangerous business. It's easy to say, "Well, there's something there if only the RCMP could have a look." /5
5/ The discussion and decision do not matter. What matters is the result and if there's no indication of anything criminal (she testified not) or that she was directed (she testified not), then the public is meant to indulge in fantasy and that is not reality.

It has been received wisdom for as long as I can remember that leaders/politicians need to have no advance notice about questions that they might be asked in an interview or debate. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44
2/ The idea seems to have been that putting a politician on the spot helps voters make useful judgments. I just don't see it. The person-in-the-street/undecided voter questions are mostly nonsensical. /3
3/ No good information comes from them. Often they just aren't based on any level of civic understanding. I don't care if the undecided voter has a dog or has x-number of grandchildren. /4

Can we stop asking the public what they want debated? How many debates and news programs and political talk-shows have I suffered through and I have yet to see a factual, definitive, exploration of subjects that are ripe for cheap-shots. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44
2/ Long-term boil-water advisories. There is no public understanding of this. Afghanistan. There is no exploration of what happened after 2011 (combat ended) and 2014 (training ended).
3/ Deficits, debt, and fiscal management. It can't be *that* hard to explain this to the public. Instead, it's ripe territory for disinformation, misinformation, and just plain bullish*t. /4

The debate moderator has no business evaluating Mr. Singh’s popularity. Now Ms. Kurl is validating how the House worked in the pandemic. And is interrupting the PM. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44
2/ Now Ms. Kurl is participating as if she’s a leader. The questions are loaded in that she seems to be supplying the answer she wants, as Mr. Blanchet noted. /3
3/ Now Ms. Kurl is passing herself off as an energy expert. In fact Canada is a net exporter of oil and the North American energy industry is highly integrated. /4

Now Global Calgary is misleading viewers by hosting Frappuccino Institute's Franco Terrazzano. He's ranting away about deficits and balance as if balancing the budget is the be-all of fiscal management. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44 @GlobalCalgary
2/ As I keep noting whether or not the government is in surplus or deficit is somewhat irrelevant. The relevant metric is the cost of servicing Canada's debt and how that cost compares to average GDP growth (and therefore government revenues) /3
3/ Mr. Terrazzano is stuck in the 1990s and Global has no business letting him promote outdated ideas. He mentioned that the Liberals promise not to tax home equity. The Conservatives have been fear-mongering that erroneous idea since before the 2019 election. /4

The last time I had my aged Honda serviced where I purchased it, Village Honda, there was a stack of Epoch Time papers in the waiting room. I complained (politely). Today there were more in the lovely waiting room (c/w very nice coffee machine). /2 @Village_Honda @HondaCanada
2/ Epoch Times is considered to be a far-right, conspiracy-theory-spreading, Trump-supporting newspaper. It offends me to see it at Honda. Do we need more QAnon crap in the middle of a pandemic? /3
3/ I saw some free Calgary Suns, too. I hope these low-quality offerings don't reflect the politics of Village Honda's ownership/management. I will be disappointed if they do. They don't reflect the quality of the service I've enjoyed. Here's a balanced view of Epoch Times... /4

When Canada's public broadcaster (CBC's The National) confuses our system of government with the American one, it is a very sad day. There is no fixed "term" in a Canadian government. /2 #cdnpoli #Elxn44 @CBCTheNational
2/ There is a maximum length of time a government can govern (4 years). However, whether leading a majority or minority government, the PM enjoys the latitude to advise the GG to dissolve Parliament. /3
3/ In a minority (or majority) government, the government falls if it fails to retain the confidence of the House. None of this involves a fixed "term" in the manner of the American system of government. /4
