The 8th Schedule of our Constitution lists 22 languages. Yet we see linguistic chauvinism where only Hindi & Sanskrit are promoted by Union govt

This attempt to homogenise our linguistic diversity is based on the false assumption that Hindi is the most widely spoken language
++ India has at least 780 languages & dialects. Census 2011 reported 19,569 raw mother tongue, which were ‘rationalised’ into 1,369 mother tonguevs & then regrouped into 270 mother tongues

++ Under the “Hindi” language 16.7 million speakers have been included though they speak ‘other mother tongues.’

The population of some of the ‘minoritised’ languages, like Bhili (10.4 million speakers) & Gondi (2.98 million speakers) exceeds that of many small countries

++The mother tongues under Hindi Bhojpuri (50.6 mn speakers), Rajasthani (25.8 mn) & Chhattisgarhi (16.2 mn) have speakers comparable to Spanish speakers in Spain, Polish in Poland, Dutch in Netherlands, yet they don't have the status of ‘language’ as per Indian Census
++54 languages are treated as mother tongues under Hindi !

Homogenisation of mother tongues under dominant languages diminishes the linguistic rights of their speakers

Many of India’s excluded languages & mother tongues fall under UNESCO’s endangered languages
++just to clarify, I'm not against the language, per se

I'm against its imposition

Tamil Nadu Assembly passes Bill to scrap #NEET in the State. All parties supported this, except the BJP, which walked out

Since its introduction in 2017 it has been condemned by students, civil-society groups & political parties ++
++ since it disproportionately disadvantages students from marginalised communities

Every year since then, the NEET has led to numerous deaths by suicide of medical aspirants from the state - at least 18 suicides among young, Bahujan medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu ++
++ Until 2017, due to the wide accessibility & comparatively good quality of govt schools in the state, medical education was representative of marginalised Dalit, Adivasi & Bahujan communities

Wow! Corporates walk away with huge haircuts after defaulting on loans!

Reliance Naval has admitted claims worth over Rs 12,400 cr from banks

But highest bidder under IBC offers Rs 2,000 cr - that's 80% haircut !
++out of the ₹2000 crores mentioned above, only Rs 700 crore is coming upfront. The rest will be paid out over time.

Laws are clearly not equal for all!

#Thread on Stunting in India

▪︎Nearly one-third of all stunted children in the world are in India

▪︎India's average rate of stunting is 36% while that of Sub-Saharan Africa is 31%

▪︎Children from SCs, ST & Muslim families are more likely to experience stunting

▪︎The findings make it clear that social class has a critical bearing on stunting

▪︎The practice of untouchability plays a big role in stunting, said the study, therefore even among the disadvantaged groups, Dalit children are more stunted

▪︎This condition causes adverse outcomes later in life, especially impaired brain development, which leads to lower cognitive and socio-emotional skills and lower levels of educational attainment which in turn affects their earnings in future

For all those who were asking me 'why mention caste of rape victim when it's a #Dalit ', here is why -

The Dalit female happens to be the most oppressed in the world

They comprise about 16% of India's female population & face a triple burden of gender bias,

caste discrimination & economic deprivation

Ten Dalit women are raped every day in India - there are many, many more unreported ones

NCRB data reveals there has been an increase of 15% in no. of crimes against women & children from SC/ST communities in the last 4 years

Also, pendency rate of crimes against Dalit women & children in special courts is high for all forms of violence

High acquittal rate motivates & boosts the confidence of dominant & powerful communities for continued perpetration of violence against Dalit females

A short thread on how prices of petrol & diesel are fixed in India -

Domestic Crude oil production does not determine fuel prices here. That's a misconception held by many.

1. Retail Fuel prices in India are NOT linked with global CRUDE oil prices
2. Domestic demand-supply dynamics do not determine retail fuel prices here

3. Price is determined through TPP - Trade Parity Pricing, i.e. on the basis of international prices of FINISHED PRODUCT of petrol & diesel. ++
Fuel is priced AS IF 80% of the FINISHED product is imported & NOT on the basis of actual cost incurred by our oil companies, which is much lower

4.This, despite the fact that India is a NET EXPORTER of finished fuel - our exports are several times greater than imports

Income Tax collection (₹4.69 Trillion) surpasses Corporation Tax (₹4.57 Trillion) by ₹12,000

This is NOT because of companies making losses. It's because of decline in Corporate Tax rates !

The govt has been reducing Corp tax & penalising common people with heavy tax on fuel
* ₹12,000 CRORES difference
