@williamadler78 let's be super clear about this: this is the chilling effect on speech. Fox News is making a habit to quote controversial tweets from Black scholars on the left, with the express purpose of inciting a hate campaign. 1/
@williamadler78 it's not just them. but this is classic tactic to try and silence people who challenge power and widely accepted ideas. 2/
@williamadler78 being the target of these campaigns is very disruptive and scary to one's life. it really does make you rethink speaking up publicly (or at least for me) and others see it and draw similar conclusions and it keeps people in line by being genuinely unpleasant. 3/
@williamadler78 every university should be reading Syracuse's statement as a model for how to do this and everyone concerned about academic freedom, "viewpoint diversity" and chilling speech on campus should be out in front here. @anneapplebaum i'm looking at you. 4/4
@williamadler78 @anneapplebaum actually one more thing for academics and writers in this space: we need to really sit with the fact that the people this article features who are being attacked are Black and that this is racist, targeted harassment.

Bloomberg should delete this bad faith garbage. Professors have been the subject of public scorn based almost entirely on lies. There is a place for a conversation about the cost of higher ed and what did and did not go well in 20-21 year. But most of us in the classroom...
Virtual or live (and a lot of us were live) were really trying to do our best under very frustrating conditions
And what were colleges supposed to do. Again a lot of us tried to make it work, at considerable risk. But a full college experience wasn’t possible. Take it up with the virus
