Another “holy shit how could you wait to publish this in a book?!” scoops…
According to Robert Costa:

- Intel suggested China believed Trump was preparing to attack
- Milley assured his counterpart we would not
- 1/6 rattled China. Milley called his counterpart again.
- Milley in 1/8 call with Pelosi agreed Trump was unstable...
- Milley believed China could lash out bc of Trump's behavior and asked USINDOPACOM to postpone exercises
- Milley "pulled a Schlesinger" to ensure they would involve him if Trump ordered a nuclear strike
- Haspel: "We are on the way to a right-wing coup"

- PENCE called Dan Quayle to see if there was any wiggle room to avoid certification(!!!)
- Qualye: "you have no flexibility on this"
-Milley saw parallels btw 1/6 & the Russian Revolution of 1905 and how it set the stage for 1917.
- Was 1/6 a "dress rehearsal"?

Chilling stuff.

It was very possible to have killed bin Laden at Tora Bora in December 2001. Goddamn, these past few days have been like a demonic time machine.
Exactly right. The man literally said "I really just don't spend that much time on him."

Ruminating about the course of the war(s) with @_zakali and thinking about how leaders across the mainstream political spectrum and the media lionized the "Warrior Philosopher" breed of generals and admirals. (1/13)
Stormin' Norman and Tommy Franks types were out and more outwardly academic brass was the new hotness. Petraeus kicked it off in the post-Rumsfeld era with the success of the 2007 Iraq surge... (2/13)
With the end of the Bush Admin, 9/11 still fresh, and chaos in Iraq still stinging, President Obama understandably wanted to refocus on Afghanistan. He agonized over the size of a new surge. Biden opposed a surge altogether. (3/13)

Biden has 2 goals as I see it:

1) Reassure the American people that withdrawal was the right decision

2) Address the rapid collapse of the government and announce a clear vision for the steps he will take as Commander-in-Chief to mitigate further harm to those who assisted us
To accomplish these, Biden must fully own his decision-making & the path forward. Leave the buck-passing to others. He has the unenviable task of threading the needle between confidence and compassion; between moral clarity and pragmatism. It can be done.
.@POTUS: "I am President of the United States of America and the buck stops with me."

Arresting a Black woman legislator while Georgia Republicans shove through a voter suppression law...
My God... @ 1:22

"All we asked is for her to be able to see them sign a bill that is signing our rights away. And you arrested her... you're arresting a sitting state representative for NOTHING! She didn't do anything but knock on the governor's door"

5 hours after Biden said this, Georgia proved his point.

[This tweet is about geopolitics]

China is flexing hard. Alaska summit. Taiwan. Philippines.

They're angling for a scrap w/ Biden and clearly testing his mettle.

Biden needs stress test our soft power. It carries a great deal of risk but he's gotta do it eventually.
The reason we need to stress test is to accesses how much damage Trump has done to our credibility. It goes without saying that it is massive but we've gotta know what we're working with.
This is a great question. When it comes to Taiwan in particular, the US should strongly encourage Taiwan to renounce the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement and increase engagement w/ ASEAN.

We haven't done enough to mourn the victims as a country. Many of us recall 9/11 victims to this day. Barbara Olson, Todd Beamer, Betty Ong? We took time as a country to memorialize them. We should dedicate more time to remembering Covid's victims. They were people, not numbers.
I was in high school on 9/11. 2 classmates lost parents at the Pentagon. It was wrenching. When I got home from school, I saw my neighbor, an Army colonel, hunched over his deck. Didn't say a word to him. Later I learned that 2 weeks earlier, he would've been in the blast zone.
My point is that 9/11 was a psychological trauma for all Americans. But for many in NY and DC, it was up close, raw, and personal. Covid is everywhere. We are again dealing with national trauma but this time it is up close and personal everywhere.
