Life update! after 2 sessions in the MO House, I've officially resigned as a staffer. Helping serve the people of Missouri was an incredible honor and I will forever cherish the lifelong friendships I made. The toll this position took on my mental health however was immense. 1/5
Being a gay staffer in Missouri was a traumatizing experience. I and my queer colleagues listened to *hours* of homophobic, transphobic testimony + debate. The men ogle my femme body in the hallways and then in committee spout homophobic and sexist rhetoric. It is chilling. 2/5
I am not alone in my experiences. Most of the queer staffers I know have left or are leaving this year. I have the UTMOST respect for the tireless and thankless work the Democrats do in that building and in our state and I am so lucky to have been a small part of that work. 3/5
I have bittersweet feelings about my time in the #moleg but I do know that we need to get more Democrats elected. It's hard to make change while the GOP holds a supermajority. Donate to the folks running for the MOHouse, volunteer to knock doors! Missouri NEEDS YOU. 4/5
For now, I'm excited to announce I'll be moving into the political consulting world! I've accepted a position with SBDigital based out of Washington DC and can't wait to work towards getting Dems elected across the country! I am super excited for what the future holds for me! 5/5
This isn't about me, it's about what many staffers go through + isn't talked about publicly. Many staffers have had worse experiences than me, have worked in the building longer, or still work in the building! They've broken barriers, written policy, among other amazing things.
I'm lucky to be able to leave and realize not all have that privilege. I also want to give a massive shout out to those who are choosing to stay and fight. I love you guys. <3
