Today's the big day to #RecallNewsom
Some final thoughts.
First of all, GET OUT AND VOTE. I joke about the system being rigged, but that's irrelevant. Your vote means you're engaged. Your absence means you've given up. We can't work with those who've given up.
It's true - @CAGOP has a massive team ready to observe the process. The more people vote, the more we have to work with to scrutinize.
The other issue with calling the system "rigged" is that it destroys public debate. Everyone feels justified in their own thoughts. But the fact is, plenty of Californians still support Newsom, and think Republicans are anti-vaxx Nazis.
I discussed how CA Democrats have changed the voting rules to make it harder to scrutinize and easier to cheat. We have millions of ballots blizzarded by @CA_DMV with nobody to account for them.…
If I were to structure an audit of the recall process, it would be like this: take a sample of ballots cast in various counties. Do outreach to those voters. Ask them if they voted, and when. Make sure the testimony matches the recorded vote.
My prediction is a lot of these people will say they never voted, or had no idea they had a ballot, or just are nowhere to be found.
Now, the other issue: Democrats calling the recall election "undemocratic." Our city council majority said as much - which was a testament to how they have no defense of @GavinNewsom . This is bunk.
In fact, the only thing that has kept California accountable to the voters has been our initiative process. Voters can do a referendum or a recall at any jurisdiction - city, state, county.
A recall election is a high bar to pass. It needs 20% of registered voters to sign, in person, in ink, that they want the person removed from office immediately. It implies a consensus that the official has violated their promises.
The claim that it's undemocratic because "the replacement could win with less than 30% of the vote" is also bogus. The fact is, anyone who votes "yes" to recall, is saying they're fine with any of the replacements.
And for those of us who voted yes, it's true. Look as far down the list as you'd like, there is not a soul on there that I wouldn't prefer to replace Newsom. A potted plant would be a viable replacement.
And again, a Republican replacement would still have to deal with Democrat supermajorities in both houses. We're not seeing abortion bans, the elimination of the minimum wage, or any of their other scare tactics.
So where to next? If Elder somehow squeaks out a win, that would be amazing. If Newsom wins, we're all predicting a "mandate mandate" - meaning further, deeper, more permanent lockdowns.
Fortunately the CAGOP convention is also next weekend, and we're finally doing it in person (if Newsom would continue to allow it!) A lot of us will be looking at next moves and how we can make the election process trustworthy again.
And you still have some time to get out the vote today. You can do so from anywhere.
