At least for beginners.

Hear me out, strength training is about getting your body stronger but it is definitely not limited to weight lifting. You can have strength training session with just your body weight.

What is strength training?

Simply put, it’s training that makes you stronger 😅. You can now do movement with your body that you couldn’t do before. Strength can be seen from lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing.

But Noni, how do I carry my body? 🙄
Let me illustrate.

1. Lift

With weights or at the gym, you will lift a weight (e.g dead lift, chest press, curls)

With your body weight you will lift/carry your body with your arms or legs and an engaged core (e.g mountain climbers, step ups , squat jumps)
2. Pull

With weights or at the gym you’re pulling the weight (e.g dumbbell bent over row, pull up, leg curl, fire hydrant 😍)

Without weights (reverse lunge, single leg deadlifts)

You’ll find that most of these exercises are the same with or without weights.
It’s very important to start with these exercises without weights, obviously to avoid injury and to benchmark your strength. Yes you can carry 20L bucket water and wood on your head but heyi 👀 don’t do that here.
3. Push

With weights or at the gym, you’re pushing the weight (e.g Bulgarian split squat, forward lunge, tricep dips)

Without weights and with your body weight (e.g push up, flute bridge, forward lunge)
Again, you can see that the exercises are the same or similar with or without weights 😉

Before I digress, the point here is you can build up strength without weights. I highly encourage you to lift weights but please know that you don’t have to if that’s not your vibe 😅
