- Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, one of the bravest authors this world has ever seen. Image
The 5th, 6th and 7th sentence of the book breaks down 3 classes of people.

- The Organizers of Prisoners/Government
- The Enforcement Group/Military and Authority
- The imprisoned

My Q’s:
- are all groups “imprisoned” by something?
- Which group is one in?
- On who’s order? Image
“Oh, you citizens who love to travel! Do not forget that in every station there are a GPU Branch and several prison cells”

When read from the authors perspective this quote is a warning that the state has overreached.
When read from the State’s perspective it is a direct threat Image
“A submissive sheep is a find for a wolf” Image
“Others…who found themselves in a trap or an ambushed apartment by accident, and were bold enough to escape immediately, before they could be questioned, were never caught and never charged”

Be ahead of the curve.

“An arrest consists of a series of incidental irrelevancies, of a multitude of things that do not matter,…and yet all these incidental irrelevancies taken together implacably constitute the arrest”

It is not all at once, but a collection of moments that ends one’s freedom. Image
The prisoner class must guide their party to the prison, carrying the evidence for which they have been arrested.

The government shows up at your door with a printout of your tweets/posts…

We are walking Self-Incrimination Machines. By design. Image
These moments of clarity are by No means coincidental.

Solzhenitsyn collected the words of the future into his pen and has transferred his story to well over 200 million through ink.

The audience you are searching for will find you if your work is great enough. In time. Image
Extrajudicial Reprisal:

The only punitive organ in human history that combined in one set of hands:
- Investigation
- Arrest
- Interrogation
- Prosecution
- Trial, and
- Execution of the Verdict Image
They don’t just want you, they want your future and your children and your children’s future.

The fact that you exist terrifies them. Image

“There is no step, thought. Action, or lack of action under e heavens which could not be punished by the heavy hand of Article 58.”

Next, Let’s Break down Article 58. Image
In Section 1 we learn that “any action directed toward the weakening of state power was considered to be counterrevolutionary” ImageImage
Section 2 bans “armed rebellion, seizure of power in the capital or provinces, through use of force”

It also “applied to every attempt of any national republic to act upon its right to leave the U.S.S.R. Even when the entire population wants to secede”

Secession = Rebellion Image
Section 3 made illegal the “assisting in any way or by any means a foreign state at war with the U.S.S.R.” Image
Section 4 bans “aid to the international bourgeoisie” Image
Section 5 bans the “inciting of a foreign state to declare war against the U.S.S.R.”

Section 6 bans “Espionage” Image
Section 7 bans any “subversion of industry, transport, trade, and the circulation of money.” Image
Section 8 covered “terror”

Section 9 banned “destruction or damage by explosion or arson” Image
Section 10 bans “propaganda or agitation, containing an appeal for the overthrow, subverting, or weakening of the Soviet power…and equally, the dissemination or preparation or possession of literary materials of similar content” Image
Section 11 was a special one, it added a sort of additional charge: “If the action was undertaken by an organization or if the criminal joined an organization” Image
Section 12 banned “failure to make a denunciation of any action of the types listed”

Snitching is required by law.

Section 13 bans “service in the Tsarist secret police” a long outdated organization with few living members at the time. Image
Section 14 bans “Sabotage/Economic Counterrevolution” and suggests penalties for “conscious failure to carry out defined duties or intentionally careless execution of same” Image
Solzhenitsyn sums up article 58 and the U.S.S.R. Prison system:

“Should we wrap it all up and simply say that they arrested the innocent?… so we can’t even discuss these out-of-date concepts, guilt and innocence” Image

They took those who were:
-too independent
-too influential
-too well-to-do
-too intelligent
-too noteworthy

“The population was shaken up, forced into silence, and left without any possible leaders of resistance” Image
“This was his first experiment of the sort with an entire nationality, and he found it extremely interesting from a Theoretical point of view”

Oh my God Image
“Those who refused to stand to the death and who retreated without permission,…(these men) were herded into punishment battalions, and were soaked up in the red sand of advanced position”

Those who refused to voluntarily die were forced to be the initial sacrifice, by force. Image
In the history of ‘decrees’ from political leaders, what percent have gone well?, and if it’s not 0%, I’ll remind you that radical claims require radical amounts of evidence, so prove it. Image
“‘Just give us a person-and we’ll create the case’ That was what many of them said jokingly, and it was their slogan” Image
“Stalin could never be convinced that in any district, or city, or military unit, he might suddenly cease to have enemies”
“Power is a poison well known for thousands of years” Image

“But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”

I was waiting for this one ☝️ Image
“Ideology- that is what gives evildoing its long-sought justification and gives the evildoer the necessary steadfastness and determination”

“Thanks to ideology, the twentieth century was fated to experience evildoing on a scale calculated in the millions”

Sheesh #Gulag Image
“Young people are acquiring the conviction that foul deeds are never punished on earth, that they always bring prosperity.

It is going to be uncomfortable, horrible to live in such a country!”

Sound familiar yet? #GulagArchipelago Image
One might compare this to the quote from ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ about Institutionalization Image
“Thanks to all he remembered, he somehow managed to put into Perspective everything that had taken place in the past and everything that was taking place in the present. Such people are valuable not only in a cell.

We badly need them in our society as a whole”

#Gulag Image
“Spring promises everyone happiness” Image
Aren’t we all somewhat guilty of abandoning those that we no longer “need”.

Everyone destroys bonds. It has to happen.

Soviet leadership is guilty of abandoning its entire populous.

When one betrays one’s self, or betrays mankind, is that not also an entire populous? #Gulag Image
“Their calculating Motherland who had betrayed them, and not just once but thrice” Image

“This, if you will, was not politics and not the Motherland, but just sheer caveman distrust: If I take pity on him, he is going to kill me. Image
“Well-fed horses don’t rampage”

The main cause of Revolutions is an empty stomach. Image
“By the time it’s today, yesterday’s martyr is already in the wrong”

Thus we see the issue with martyr and victim hood culture. It is a slippery slope.

“These young people from 25-27 already represented and firmly defended several points of view…
‘The non-prejudgers’”
They believed, “anyone who had not shared…the whole, complex burden of the past decades had no right to decide anything about the future of Russia” #Gulag Image
“Only one life is allotted to us, one small, short life!”

“And one could go into the woods… just to go, for no reason” Image
“But… for mercy one must have wisdom. This has been a truth throughout our history and will remain one for a long time to come”

#GulagArchipelago Image
“There is a simple truth which one can learn only through suffering... Governments need victories and the people need defeats”
“A people needs defeat just as an individual needs suffering and misfortune: they compel the deepening of the inner life and generate a spiritual upsurge Image

“All sources of light can to some degree be compared with the Sun. And the Sun cannot be compared with anything” Image
“An excellent judicial system is the last fruit of the most mature society, or else one needs a Solomon” Image
“A partial court is worse than banditry.
Judges are enemies; there sleeps the law.
In front of you the citizen’s neck
Lies stretched out, quiet and without defense” - the poet Derzhavin
- Solzhenitsyn Image
“We forget everything. What we remember is not what actually happened, not history…” Image
“How many wholly random people, completely random, whose destruction inevitably accounts for half the casualties of every real, shooting revolution, were caught between those millstones?” Image
“That was the way it was in those years: people lived and breathed and then suddenly found out that their existence was inexpedient.”

Were you declared essential or non-essential?
Did your business, family or livelihood matter enough? Image
“He expressed his mistrust and hostility towards the intelligentsia: rotten-liberal; ‘pious’, ‘the slovenliness so customary among “educated people” Image
*from the State’s perspective*

“But their most heinous acts were something else again. In the midst of the Civil War they wrote books, composed memoranda and projects” Image
“The defendants’ guilt consisted in the fact that they hadn’t sat in their own corners, sucking on their quarter-pound of bread”

“In contemporary scientific language, this is known as the study of the alternative possibility”

Today we are given a false dichotomy as truth. Image
“Political genius lies in extracting success even from the people’s ruin” Image
