#OnThisDay 8 years ago a wonderful tale of love, longing and loneliness was released that featured the late great Irrfan, @NimratOfficial and @Nawazuddin_S.

Our thread celebrating the movie. #8YearsOfTheLunchbox Image
Irrfan and Nimrat never met during the shooting of the film.

It was only during the promotions that they met for the first time. Image
This poster of The LunchBox is a nice tribute to the famous play Tumhari Amrita that starred Shabana Azmi and Farooq Shaikh.

Tumhari Amrita sees the characters communicate with each other through letters. ImageImage
The film shows the Dabbawalas and the song that they sing. When it was screened at festivals the song the dabbawalas sang wasn't subtitled. When the director was asked why - he said that it was something sacred to them and it was their communication to their deity. Image
The food that Nawazuddin and Irfan eat in the movie was undercooked, unsalted and wasn't actually edible! Image
Nawazuddin Siddiqui copied a struggling actor's style and then that struggling actor found it difficult to clear auditions because casting agents thought he was copying what Nawazuddin had done in Lunchbox.

He won the best supporting actor for his portrayal of Shaikh. Image
Bharati Achrekar played the role of a housewife in the show 'Shrimati Sharma Na Kehti Thi' - She was the only character in the show and all other characters were present only as a voice.

In a reversal in Lunchbox she is the faceless voice of Deshpande Aunty, the woman above. Image
In order to cheer himself up, Saajan Fernandes (Irrfan) watches old DD shows to cheer him up such as Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Nukkad, Buniyaad.

Did Ila and Saajan meet? Did they meet in Mumbai or in Bhutan? Guess we will never know and that's the beauty of the film.

Thank You to @riteshbatra for giving us this classic! Image

Barbenheimer was trending. A theatre in Chattisgarh played the Oppenheimer movie with Barbie subtitles. Maybe the movie works better this way. Image

If there's one movie that can fuel your drive to achieve more, it's "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar."

This timeless classic turns 32 today! 🥹

A Thread 🧵 Image
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is a coming-of-age sports-romance film, directed and co-written by Mansoor Khan.

The plot of JJWS is eerily similar to the 1979 American film "Breaking Away," produced and directed by Peter Yates.

Interestingly, Mansoor Khan, the director of JJWS, claims he wasn't aware of "Breaking Away."Image
The insightful @diptakirti says that Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar is like the Indian Archie comic!

Thus, JJWS is part of a long line of movies inspired by the Archies, including blockbusters like Bobby! Image

On December 13, 2001, a white Ambassador with a 'lal batti' and permission stickers passed through the gates of the Indian Parliament.

One person found that suspicious: Kamlesh Kumari. We should be thankful to her for that.

A thread 🧵 (1/6) Image
The car, instead of slowing down or maintaining speed, suddenly accelerated.

Equipped with only a constable's baton and a walkie-talkie, Kamlesh Kumari began following the car. She soon spotted five men, all heavily armed, heading towards the building. (2/6)
As soon as Kamlesh Kumari noticed the suspicious activity, she raised an alarm—shouting and using her walkie-talkie.

This prompt action gave the CRPF personnel a few crucial seconds to prepare and tackle the terrorists. (3/6)

If you know your Hindi films, the above is the number of Star fisheries... Or is it Star Garage?

A thread on the madcap Hindi film 'Hera Pheri'. Image
Hera Pheri is a remake of a Malayalam film ‘Ramji Rao Speaking’, which itself is inspired by “See the Man Run” a 1971 film that revolved around a wrong number, ransom call and a struggling actor.
Image
Image
The origin of this film is interesting. AG Nadiadwala had signed up Priyadarshan to direct a film called ‘Raftaar’ which had Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt along with Paresh Rawal. It was supposed to be an action film.

The muhurat was given by Bal Thackrey and Steven Seagal. Image

This ad is considered among the greatest Indian ads of all time.

But the ad was a result of a panic phone call, a Diwali vacation interrupted and a music director who had a flight to catch to Kolkata.

Read on. 👇
Back in 1994, Ogilvy were on the verge of crisis. Cadburys were looking for a new direction.

They were being perceived as a children's product which wasn't appealing to adults.

The creative genius Piyush Pandey was on Diwali vacation in USA when his boss called him. Image
It was panic and mayhem at Ogilvy. And only something truly sensational would save the account.

Piyush Pandey took the next flight available. Hawaii - Seoul - Bombay.

It was here that he thought of the lyrics of the song and wrote them on the back of his boarding pass.

A trip from Mysore to Bangalore is simply incomplete without indulging in the mouthwatering Maddur Vada in Maddur.

In 1938, the town of Shivapura in Maddur proudly hoisted the Indian national flag, leaving an indelible mark on India's freedom struggle!

A thread🧵 Image
In 1938, The Indian National Congress held its session in Haripura village in Surat, Gujarat.

The session was presided by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose. At a time when hoisting the national flag was banned by the British, the Indian flag was hoisted at the Haripura session! Image
The Haripura Congress session where the tricolor was hoisted, inspired the Mysore leaders to hold a similar event!

But, the administration in Mysore got a whiff of these plans & banned public gathering. This did not stop leaders like Siddalingaiah & others
