A quiet afternoon, clearing up and sorting the ore and pebbles and limestone.
Fascinating how this iron ore looks like.
The flat part is probably where it was hanging on to a piece of limestone.
This is a piece of limestone that must have been submerged in a heavily mineralised liquor. Bit by bit the minerals crystallised on the limestone. Various metal oxides and other „gunk“. I don’t think it had a low pH
This is a treat for you who have followed on so far. A few months ago I built a tiny kiln and fired some ore.

Well, look at that.

The metal alloy withstands 12% HCl 🙈😊
A final detailed photo, sorry about the quality.

It really does have „that“ shine..
One more 😅
I think this piece of ore is from the same spot.

A lot of ocker and clay and some iron oxides it it next to the mineral I yet have to identify.
@Lapilli_55 👋🏼 do you have an idea?

The strike on Ust-Luga last night appears to have been directed at the crude storage facility with the blue paint scheme.
It is located in the southern part of the port there and consists of dozens of large concrete tanks and pier infrastructure: Image

In the two images above you can see the tanks in the background and the lines used to transfer from the tanks to a tanker.
In the first image there appears to be a small cabin where many cables lead to: Image
It is located here. On the facade facing west there are seven split cooling units, they are commonly used for heat management in motor control cabinets and general electrical distribution. I expect part of the control system of the facility to be located there. Image

Suprnova posted this footage from Ust-Luga at night.
The white flames are due to the potato camera used and the enormous heat of the fire. Infernal situation. Working these many fires is exceptionally dangerous:

Situational awareness is limited for fire fighters on the hoses. Not only does the fire have its own sensory component (sound and light and heat), the helmet and visor limit awareness too.
Major risk to fire fighters and their equipment in a case like this is the catastrophic rupture of a tank leading to widespread spill of hundreds or even thousands of cubic meters of flammable media.

Some may wonder why I am confident they will experience a full blown fuel shortage.

If I would own and manage a refinery I would in lieu of what occurred at Proletarsk last year, do three things:

- Ask for air defence
- Reduce stocks on premises
- Try mitigating risks
Point one:
I‘d want someone to blame if anything went wrong that I can‘t influence.

Point two:
Reducing stocks reduces operational cost. It reduces the risk of a spectacular multi-day fire. It may bring savings by reducing the planned maintenance on certain equipment too.
Point three:

Mitigating risks.. Well. They installed netting. I would also make sure my fire brigade is very well manned and trained and equipped. Spic and spell. (I am absolutely not going to divulge any more)

Now that the meeting in Shanghai is ongoing I wanted to warn of the issues in the Chinese economy.

Do you remember Evergrande?
The company went bust four years ago. It has left a huge portfolio of about 1300 building projects in different stages of completion. Most of them are of questionable quality and completing them makes no sense because there already are tens of millions of vacant apartments in CN.
Real estate was viewed by their population as a safe investment. National and international banks found a growth sector after the Subprime crisis in the US. Evergrande and about a dozen other companies from the sector grew substantially since 2000, fuelled by debt.

Well, @TheRedLinePod..

The economics of nuclear don't add up - until we have an equitable price for every ton of CO2 emitted.

I think we should go for the main issue:
CO2

Nuclear does make sense with 6-20g CO2-eq)/kWh.
Also: PV modules don‘t grow on magic trees on wish dot com.

CN has apparently green lit more coal power plants. „clean coal“ was a horrific mess in the US, what did that plant cost?
Also: I don‘t see the issue with cost for storage of nuclear waste.

In the US the waste has to be kept on site because people (some with very strange views on us as a species) are apparently blocking a central and accessible depot.
