Utpanna Ekadashi is the day when Ekadasi Vrata started 1000s of years ago or when the vrata originated, also called Utpatti Ekadasi. Those who wish to start taking Ekadasi Vrata can begin from this day. Image
Ekadasi Devi appeared on this day from Mahavishnu to destroy Demon Mura. It is said that Mura was hiding in the rice bag. Therefore rice consumption is considered to be a sin on Ekadasi. Story says war between Mura and Mahavishnu lasted for many years and
Mahavishnu went to rest. Taking advantage of this Mura tried to attack Vishnu.

At that time a devi came from Vishnu and destroyed Mura. The birthplace of Ekadasi is Himawati Cave, located in the Himalayas at Badrinath.
