Though the second most telling thing is that the email chains often involved Gruden, Bruce Allen, the cofounder of Hooters, a college bowl executive and the founder of a fried chicken chain.

(Providing fans “the most accurate, fair and complete story” quite explicitly means remaining independent and retaining full control of it, not sending a draft to a source as a heads up or allowing them to edit any part of it)

"Digital sports news firm The Athletic hemorrhaged nearly $100 million cash between 2019 and 2020, according to a presentation prepared for investors, exceeding the $73 million in revenue the company brought in over that same period.” theinformation.com/articles/the-a…
The Information got The Athletic’s financials, and they show that it will need to nearly double revenue in the next two years just to be cash flow neutral. That seems like a pretty big challenge.
Another interesting thing is that The Athletic has hired a bank and wants to sell for $750m, which happens to be almost exactly 10x its projected 2021 revenue of $77.
