A policeman’s lot - thread

Since the sentencing of Wayne Couzens for the murder of Sarah Everard, I have witnessed the most anger and frustration toward Policing that I have ever encountered in my 26 years.

Officers called rapists and murderers, just because of their job
Being accused of complicity and wilful neglect. Every mainstream media outlet rushing out hatchet job “journalism” with woeful conclusions drawn from selective data. Ex officers being paid huge fees to appear and throw rocks at organisations they were happy to work for previously
Everyone with an opinion but varying degrees of knowledge about the realities of policing keen to tell us what we should be doing better, and dismissive when we point out facts and lived experience.

We literally can’t win…
I’ve never felt so unappreciated, so hurt, so unfairly treated.

I have spent all my adult life trying to keep people safe. It’s more than what I do, it’s who I am.

I’ve sacrificed physical well-being, mental health, socially, financially and emotionally.
I’ve seen and heard things that no civilised society should ever tolerate. I’ve given everything I could to help the most damaged and vulnerable.

I know over the last 1/4 century I haven’t always got it right. I learn, the organisation learns. We improve. We try harder.
Mistakes happen. Often with the best intention. I, like most cops, never come to work to do a bad job. We just don’t always get it perfect.

Have the last few weeks changed me? No. I’ll still keep doing my best. It’s in my bones. It’s what I am to my core. I’m a police officer
And I’m damn proud of that. Every morning I can look at myself in the mirror and be proud of the person I see.

No murdering scumbag, angry keyboard warrior, self serving politician, or hack journalist can take that away from me.

There are hundreds of thousands of me,
Up and down the country right now. All doing their best to make this a better and safer place to be. I continue to be amazingly proud of us all.

We don’t need to change.
