These days when I speak to a lot of designers starting out in their Design careers, I am appalled at their myopic view of the world of design, and mostly limited to the tech world, aka, "UI / UX" design.

The world of design is meant to be explored.

Broaden your perspective.
The one thing amongst lot of great designers is the diversity in their work.

Massimo Vignelli once said, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything"

Often in design interviews, I would ask people to design something totally out of their portfolio.
Charles and Ray Eames, perhaps the most famous designer couple, embodied this aspect very well.

So you can see design process being applied in the design of furniture, films, exhibition design, homes, product design.

The diversity of work is inspiring and hard to find today.
“The most important thing is that you love what you are doing & the second that you are not afraid of where your next idea will lead.” ― Charles Eames

Our design education needs to drive this point better.

Designers were once the Explorers. Today they're more like Operators.
Enjoy this short video on 'The Design Genius of Charles + Ray Eames', spoken by their grandson, showcasing the diversity of work.

I am always awed by this ability to apply Design Processes to any kind of project.
"Really good designers are like sponges, they really are curious and absorb every kind of information that comes their way, and transform it so that it can be used by people like us."

- Paola Antonelli , Curator and Director at The Museum of Modern Art, New York City.
The diversity of work in your design, enhances the elasticity of the mind. As a designer this is the one thing you definitely want to develop.
