White #musictherapy -ists, let's talk about how to learn and do better within the profession and the professional association: Let's start with educating ourselves rather than relying on POC to do the work for us. 1/
1. Start with "Waking Up White" by Debby Irving. debbyirving.com/the-book/
Once you're done with that, move on to "A Race Is A Nice Thing to Have" by Dr. Janet E. Helms. titles.cognella.com/a-race-is-a-ni…
2. If you like books, keep going. "How To Be An Antiracist" by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi is amazing.
3. Listen to some podcasts, or watch a movie or documentary. NPR put together an entire collection in one place for us to access: npr.org/sections/codes…
4. Listen to Black music therapists and creatives talk about their experiences and lives. blackmtnetwork.org/black-creative…
5. Listen to the people saying they have been harmed. Believe them when they say it. Don't ask for a blow by blow. No one should have to perform their racial trauma for white people. Listen to understand and not to respond.
6. Showing Up for Racial Justice has all kinds of resources for white people learning about white supremacy and its manifestations. surj.org/category/resou…
7. Read the information that is available about the harm done: docs.google.com/document/d/1_-…
"Freedom Dreams: What Must Die In Music Therapy to Preserve Human Dignity" by Dr. Norris.
8. If you want to learn directly from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, pay them for the labor. Pay them for preparation time, presentation time, and any other time of theirs you use. The same goes for anyone from a community from whom you want to learn.
9. Here is a padlet I'm working on to collect resources. padlet.com/mkmasko1/Bookm…
