.@dhume :
India’s privatization program represents a sweeping rollback of state control.. (n) a sharp repudiation of India’s first prime minister, Nehru, n his daughter, Indira Gandhi.
In 1978 an opposition govt even more suspicious of private ent.. completed Tata’s humiliation by dismissing him...
2 factually incorrect claims by @dhume : it had nothing to do with anti-pvt ent..pers thing btwn JRD n Desai who BTW resigned f/govt in oppo to bank takeover.
n, @dhume Sir, 3 out of 5 main constituents of that govt - Swa/BKD, BJS, Old Cong - had opposed all those crazy econ policies/actions of IG - at great political costs, a profile in courage (BTW, among those on IG's sides then were PVN n MMS).
AI’s nationalization signaled that in independent India private ent w/survive on govt’s sufferance. In 1955, two years after New Delhi took over AI, ruling Cong Party passed a resolution calling for est of “a socialist pattern of society.”
I think HAL takeover was 1st one.
Nehru govt nationalized life insurance in 1956. In 1969 Indira Gandhi took over 14 pvt banks. In the 1970s she nationalized general insu n coal, as also foreign oil majors.
Also, whole-sale grain trade.
Over decades, govt poured billions into SOEs to supply everything - hotels, wristwatches n camera film. Often these became cesspools of inefficiency n corruption, run as pvt fiefs by pols/bureaucrats. In 1960, PSUs accounted for 8% of India’s GDP. By 1991, it had risen to 26%.
That year, faced with a BoP crisis, India began econ reforms. India scrapped indl licensing, slashed tariffs, n began opening more sectors of economy to private participation. In 1994, it allowed companies to establish private airlines for 1st time in four decades.
But privatization remained a 3rd rail in Indian politics. Generations of leftist politicians had touted idea of PSUs as part of natl patrimony. Advocating for privatization opened you to charges of selling family silver. Most Indian pols were afraid to even use the word.
This caution made political sense. Another PM from Mr. Modi’s BJP, AB Vajpayee (1998-2004), privatized firms spanning telecoms, automobiles, aluminum n hotels, among others. Vajpayee tried n failed to sell a 40% stake in Air India. He lost his bid for re-election.
After that, privatization stalled. In his 1st term, Mr. Modi struggled too. Then-FM Jaitley pref acct gimmicks - SOEs buying stakes in other SOEs to boost govt revenue - over transferring assets to private owners. A 2018 attempt to sell AI failed to attract a single bidder.
We don’t know for sure if deal with Tatas w/reach closure. (India’s courts have habit of meddling in econ decisions.) Critics say Tatas w/struggle to turn around an airline that has become a global byword for public-sector mismgt.
Indians like to reminisce abt a time when, under JRD Tata, AI was famous for its excellent service n witty advertising. Tata reportedly paid personal attn to wine pouring n stewardess hairstyles, n made sure aircraft were spick-and-span.
But whether Tatas return airline to its past glory is beside point. On WhatsApp, Indians celebrating deal joked that “Tata does not mean goodbye.” But Indian taxpayers s/hope it does mean farewell to one thing - daft idea of bureaucrats running businesses.
- @dhume
also @dhume Sir, advisor (Dr Jay Dubashi) to Inds Min had proposed listing of PSUs on SEs (same way as MNCs listing IN subs b/c of FERA) n Cong n leftists incl some within led by HN Bahuguna made so much din that both minister n adviser were booted out. One of them was PVN.
This fake anti-busi fiction has been mfg by PVN HMVs such as @ShekharGupta by using IBM n Coca Cola dep (dishonestly desc as being forced out by Janata Govt); both pref to leave India to complying w/FERA (enacted by Cong); BTW, PVN was 1 of big beneficiaries of IG's Soc populism.
@dhume Sir m/like to chk out story of Tata Steel vs Steel Min Biju Patnaik; he wanted to take over Tata Steel but stiff opposition from within, led by Piloo Mody n supported by majority in party except leftists, ended that effort! No such example in Cong.
Some anti-pvt ent govt.

India won in 1971 tho hardly at domestic peace; war btwn IG-Commie Camp n non-commie Oppo! It was not along H-M lines (tho former did use "communal" dog-whistle) but other lines. WB was anything but peaceful.
@ShekharGupta s/know all that but then HMVs see what they like to see!
Point is: yes; a society needs harmony but that s/stand on its own - not as a vehicle to push particular political agendas masq as independent commentary.
And, why is "communal polarization" bad but others - eg, rich vs poor, caste, regl, etc. - is kosher.
And, IMHO, @ShekharGupta n his ConPrint, sorry The @ThePrintIndia s/b last to give such gyan; just check out how many articles / stories with caste as focus they hv carried n caste schism as agenda / goal.

@DrVaidik :
