This is a great column on the lies perpetuated by Uber/Lyft but we must never forget that for over 10 years the greatest asset the gig economy had was a tech media that uncritically repeated and exaggerated its claims. nytimes.com/2021/10/17/opi…
It’s a fact that if not for being underwritten by venture capital, the unprofitable & inefficient firms that dominate the “gig economy” wouldn’t exist. It’s also a fact that non-labor coverage of these companies was obsequious and key to their “success” papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
With of course obvious exceptions (reporting of scandals, workplace culture, outright illegality, etc.)
Many of the claims laid out by the column were obviously bullshit at the time of their creation. That did not stop some of the most prominent writers in tech at the time from either mindlessly affirming them or doing UberLyft’s work for them and crafting defenses of the claims
There’s a long list. Sam Harnett’s WORDS MATTER is the best essay on this subject. As far as I can tell, only one prominent tech journalist who was a part of this actually apologized for their role in a column of his within the last few years and reflected on it pretty well. One.
This is also pretty important. Especially important considering ride-hail apps have similar worker demographics and safety problems but arguably more insidious responses (the cover-up/liability unit at Uber that WaPo revealed, persistent evasion of bans overseas, etc.)

Facebook service outage is really a great data point for the argument that we should not have a global social media platform that dominates multiple lines of communication actoss various countries and regions
Probably not a good idea to have a system where many people cannot communicate with each other or the world because of a *squints at notes* server configuration error, according to the company
It’s funny that the day after the FB whistleblower said she doesn’t think antitrust is the solution…this happens. Maybe we shouldn’t have One Platform to Rule Them All, maybe she should give documents to the FTC?

have you read a dumber idea?
i know i know the headline is a bit hyperbolic of the argument but i read the argument and i do not like the argument
Why does the weakness/hypocrisy of Westphalia mean we should legitimize corporations? CORPORATRIONS which should already be contested since they're immortal persons with more rights & less responsibilities! Reading the holes corporations plug as evidence of their necessity is BAD
