So here's my story about Jerry Remy (RIP). When I was 17, my older brothers and I scored tickets to sit on the Green Monster at Fenway. We were die-hard Red Sox fans and thought Remy was the absolute best. So I hatched a plan to get his (and @DonOrsillo's) attention. Thread (1/x)
At the time, Wally the Green Monster was having a moment. The @RedSox mascot had become a beloved character on the NESN broadcast. A Wally doll would sit with Remy and Don in the booth. They'd tell funny stories about his day. It was an awesome bit. But it missed something. (2/x)
Wally needed a female co-star. So I outfitted my own Wally doll with a dress (my dad's black dress sock, sorry Dad!), put red lips on it, glued long yellow string for hair and stole my sister's bracelet for the necklace (sorry, Kim!). And so Molly the Green Monster was born.(3/x)
Now the hard part: How to get Remy and Don’s attention? We came up with a silly story that Wally had a long-lost sister. We made a poster: “HEY REMY, WE FOUND WALLY’S SISTER!”and held it to the wall all night. We waited. In the sixth inning, Mom called. (4/x)
Remember, this is 2003. Twitter isn’t a thing. What’s an iPhone? My mom dialed my brother’s flip phone and told us the breaking news: Jerry and Don had spotted us and were cackling in the booth! On air, they said they’d send their reporter @ericfrede to investigate. (5/x)
And sure enough, Frede popped up onto the Green Monster seats and got to us. He asked if we’d be OK to do a live interview on NESN. We nearly passed out. I got my story straight and before I knew it, we were live with Remy and Don. I found the clip on VHS. Behold: (6/x)
This was insane. Eric asked us if Remy and Don could keep Molly for the broadcast (uh, yes!). Eric took it to the booth and Mom called again. They've got Molly! Minutes later, Trot Nixon hit a walk-off single. Remy was convinced: that was all Molly. (7/x)
We thought that might be the end of it. But no, Molly stayed. The Red Sox went on a win streak and Molly sat in the booth for weeks watching alongside Wally in mini Adirondack chairs. Again, insane. (8/x)
Molly became the Red Sox good luck charm. In the win streak, NESN even produced a long segment that showed Molly and Wally sightseeing in Boston. Remy and Don kept the story alive and improvised little stories about Molly/Wally's emotional reunion. I swear this happened. (9/x)
Days went by, the Sox fell back down to Earth. After a while, the Molly magic had run its course. We never heard about Molly again. A few months later, Aaron Boone hit a homer over those Monster seats and ended the season. But I soon found out Molly's legacy would live on. (10/x)
If you go to a Red Sox game today, you’ll see Wally alongside a new mascot: his sister @TessieTGM. To be honest? I like the silly Molly story better. Deep down, I bet Remy did too. Thanks for the memories, Remdawg. RIP.

The first @Hoops4ALS game (1/9 on ESPN 9 ET) was announced yesterday. #Duke at #Pitt. I want to tell you about a Hoops4ALS committee member named in the paragraph below.

Adam Wilson. He died yesterday. ALS. I want to tell you about how he lived. (🧵1/18) Image
After Mom was diagnosed with ALS, my brothers and I helped start a grassroots initiative: Lou Gehrig Day. My brother Steve sent an email saying hello to 7 people with a shared dream. (Most of us hadn’t met).

In less than an hour, someone volunteered to run it. Adam. (2/18) Image
Here’s Adam and his daughter Avery in Aug '19.

Adam couldn’t speak because ALS aka Lou Gehrig’s disease is a f’ing nightmare. A neurodegenerative disease that depletes your muscle function until you can’t breathe. The first thing to go, often, is the ability to speak. (3/18) Image

As far as I can tell here's what happened:

So, foul called on Al Horford. The ref that made the call was Josh Tiven, in the foreground.

Notice that the clock shows 2.5 and Tiven has *yet to call the foul*. No hand up. 1/x Image
The clock stops at 2.1 seconds. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla challenged the FOUL call.

As you can see here, Tiven called the foul at 2.3, not 3.0 or 2.1. So why 3.0? The devil is in the details. Image
In the rulebook, not only is the foul able to be reviewed, the officials can see if there’s a DIFFERENT foul that SHOULD have been called.

Remember, Tiven waited until 2.3 to blow his whistle, AFTER Butler tried to shoot the ball and arms went flailing. Image

👁️THREAD: The NBA assigns its best, most-experienced referees to the Lakers and Warriors. Worst-caliber refs: Magic.

The league almost never puts rookie referees on Lakers, Sixers and Knicks games.

I'll explain the simple way I calculated Ref Rating. (1/x) #basketballilluminati
Each morning, the NBA publicly announces its refs for every game with role assignments (transparency!). Track this for every game and we can see which refs the NBA trusts in its leader role (Crew Chief), secondary role (Referee) and last (Umpire). #basketballilluminati (2/X)
Based on the NBA's roles, I created a very simple 5-point referee rating that a kindergartener could follow. But it's helpful! Once you map every referee with its distribution of roles (CC, R, U), we see a stratified pattern among them. #basketballilluminati (3/X)
