I keep seeing people post this clip of nobel laureate Kary Mullis calling Dr Fauci a liar, way back in 1996:

People use it to say that Fauci has always been a liar. I decided to watch the full interview.

The main response I had was: "everything old is new again".

Every single logical fallacy that's being used to doubt covid was previously used to doubt HIV.

Kary Mullis won the nobel prize for inventing PCR, the DNA amplification process that's now used for everything from genome sequencing to DNA matching at crime scenes to covid testing.
I've read Mullis' autobiography before. It's pretty entertaining. I picked it up because he seemed like a free thinker. He talked about doing LSD and other drugs. I read it at a time in my life when I was experimenting with drugs. Image
Mullis once froze his lips and his tongue by passing out while inhaling from a bottle of nitrous oxide. He claims that a woman travelling on the astral plane projected herself into his home to remove the bottle from his mouth.
The book gave me the impression that you can win a Nobel prize and still believe a lot of crazy things. Mullis believed in telepathy and astral projection. He thinks he was abducted by aliens that looked like glowing raccoons.
It made me think that there's a spectrum between being too rigid and too open minded. Maybe to come up with really clever ideas, you need to be so open minded that you also let some crazy ideas in.
So, I watched this interview and it was jaw-dropping.

AIDS denialism sounds exactly like covid denialism.
I started taking notes a half hour in.

At 30:50, Mullis says that people are dying from an HIV drug called AZT, not from the HIV virus itself.

Today, I hear that people are being killed by the ventilators. Or that they're being killed by the vaccines.
At 36:07, the interviewer says that you can cure HIV with intravenous vitamin C.

Today, we have Joe Rogan recommending IV vitamins instead of vaccines.
At 45:45, Mullis says that Fauci refuses to debate him about HIV.

That reminds me of Steve Kirsch's endless insistence that no one will debate him, because he's so right that no one can compete.
At 1:24:40 he says that it should be easy to write a paper proving how HIV causes AIDS. He claims that no one has done that, so that proves that AIDS is caused by something else.

Again, reminds me of Steve Kirsch and his webpage insisting that "no one can disprove him".
At 51:15, Mullis says that you just need to "follow the money".

That sounds very familiar...
At 46:30, Mullis says that Luc Montagnier is profiting from the HIV tests, and just wants to push out tests for everyone, to make money.

At 1:08:25 he says that the CDC just needed a new plague to get more funding.
At 49:20, he says that hospitals are overdiagnosing AIDS cases because they get paid $2500 per patient, so they're just lying for funding.

The same thing gets said about covid, all the time. People say that hospitals label deaths as covid to get funding.
At 1:26:37, he says that we've started calling everything AIDS. Uterine cancer got included as AIDS. Where will it stop? In 10 years everything will be AIDS.

Covid deniers constantly say that we're just mislabeling other deaths as covid.
At 54:00, Mullis says that "John Q Public" is too busy playing video games to pay attention.

Sounds outdated. Now we use the term "sheeple".
At 55:30, he complains that Peter Duesberg has been "martyred" for being an HIV denialist.

We've moved on to saying "cancelled" or "deplatformed".
At 1:02:00 he says that HIV cases only went up because we tested more.

That also sounds very familiar...
At 1:07:00 he says that AIDS only kills homosexuals.

Kind of like the way that people dismiss covid deaths as meaningless because most victims were old, or fat, or had comorbidities.
At 1:25:30 the interviewer says that we can't tell that AIDS exists because no one has ever taken a photograph.

I've heard that line a few times, when it comes to covid.
At 1:31:50, he says that people with AIDS just aren't eating well or taking good care of themselves.

Starting around 1:34, he says gay men spent too much time partying at the bathhouses, taking too many drugs, not getting enough sleep. Eventually they died.
At 1:46:45 Mullis says that the fear of AIDS is probably what's killing people.

This is all very reminiscent of covid deniers, who say that people only get sick because of unhealthy lifestyles. Joe Rogan goes on about how people just need to lose weight and exercise more.
At 1:45, Kary Mullis says that the whole planet has been fooled by a few greedy people into believing that HIV is a real, deadly virus.

I think Mullis is the one who's fooled himself into believing that the virus doesn't exist.

Why would such a smart guy get fooled?
At 1:03:40 Mullis says he likes to have sex with lots of different partners. He says that all STD's are curable with antibiotics. He doesn't want to believe in AIDS because that would get in the way of his promiscuous lifestyle.
It's the same thing with covid. It's inconvenient to believe in it.

If you pretend it doesn't exist, you don't have to make any sacrifices or change your lifestyle.
Around 11 minutes in to the interview, Mullis claims that AIDS was simply made up as a cultural backlash to the free love of the the 1960's.

Today, people say that covid has been made up to push a political agenda, maybe to harm Trump or to track people.
So, that was a fun listen. Human psychology never changes, we're having the same arguments 25 years later!

I wondered if anyone else appreciated just funny this is.

I scrolled down to the comments section...
Lots of people noticed the parallels between HIV and covid in this video, except... they all used them to conclude that covid is a hoax.🤦
It seems like the right response is:
"AIDS turned out to be real disease caused by HIV".
"People are using the same arguments used to doubt HIV to doubt covid"
"Maybe I shouldn't doubt that covid exists"
Instead, we get exactly the opposite. Human psychology never changes: Image
And savvy people know how to play to it. Grifters make Youtube videos. Ron DeSantis tells the masses that he wants to fire Fauci.
In the end, I think covid will turn out the same way HIV did.

Science works: we invented pills that fight that virus. People still get HIV, but they take pills that make it non-lethal.

Except in the 3rd world, where millions have died.
We'll eventually find or invent a pill that stops most covid deaths. Pfizer might have just announced that pill.

Or we'll come up with a better vaccine that actually stops transmission.
Covid death rates will get low enough that we won't think about it that much.

Millions of people will still die in the 3rd world, but we won't think about that.
And masks will end up just like condoms. You'll know that you should wear one but you won't. It feels better when you don't.
