I spoke to Natasha Shakespeare whose daughter is wrestling with escalating anti-Blackness in the Simcoe County school system. The bullies are at school. Her daughter is not. #pushout CW: description of part of the violence in thread: thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
Shakespeare’s daughter represents a disturbing explosion in anti-Black racism. Where previously concerns were about subtler forms with streaming or gifted programs, @PoBCAdvocate's Charline Grant (not in pic) says they’re all about overt racial violence. thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
These last few days alone, a T.O. teacher showed up in Blackface for Halloween; another under lens for racial slur. In Scarborough, a Black parent told a rally his son, 9, was the victim of racist bullying, escalating hate at William G. Davis JPS.#equityed thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
One parent said a boy picked up a large stone and asked his 9-year-old, “Do you see this stone?” and his son said yes. “This is your head,” said the boy and smashed it on a rock. thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
Lawyer Darryl Singer who handles dozens of these cases at any given time sees a certain trajectory: staff knows. they do nothing. When the child gets fed up a year or two after being bullied and lashes back, the board's zero-tolerance policy kicks in. thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…
CW. Shakespeare's daughter began receiving racist notes from day 1 at a new school. She still gets texts from some students accusing her of lying. I don’t have answers for her, Shakespeare says. (N-word blurred by us) thestar.com/news/gta/2021/…

Waking up to hundreds of tweets today after a white supremacists said talking about racism makes me an ingrate. As an immigrant, I'm not grateful after being "given" healthcare and a job.
A few words about immigrants and gratitude. Thread.
2/I chose to be in Canada. Canada chose me, too. I jumped through many legally required hoops to be here. So, unlike many from settler cultures, I am here by following the rules of the land.
3/ Once here, I wasn't "given" any jobs. I came with no "connections" in journalism. No godfathers/actual fathers putting in a word for me. What I got was thanks to good luck, some proximity to whiteness, great individuals willing to take a chance on me and my own hard work.
