#BOUASM21 Reversing the last 50 years of habitat degradation may not be sufficient to restore declining bird populations in Europe. The reason for this is that some other - often neglected - factors may be interacting with habitat degradation.
#BOUASM21 Overabundant generalist predators are a plausible barrier to reversing declines. We test if nesting strategy (a proxy for predation risk; ground-nesting birds are more vulnerable to generalist predators than other birds) influences breeding bird population trends.
#BOUASM21 We found that the probability of population decline in ground-nesting birds was 40% more likely than other birds. The strength of this effect was modulated by predator community complexity, farming intensity and predator control.
#BOUASM21 These results suggest that predation may be currently driving population declines in certain ecological contexts.
#BOUASM21 Our study indicates that predation pressure needs to be considered within conservation policy, as it is impacting on important and endangered bird species.
