.@SenGianaris kicks off the event by discussing @amazon's threat to communities.
"The incredible power that they have amassed stretches well beyond the business world. They assert themselves politically, they assert themselves in ways that are very dangerous for our democracy."
.@SenGianaris stresses the importance of passing New York's 21st Century Antitrust Act in the next legislative session.
"This would be nothing short of a revolution in the way we handle antitrust issues in this country." 👏
"These individual entities cross over so many markets and they are able to leverage their dominance in one industry to affect another." —@SenGianaris
Digging in on NY's 21st Century Antitrust Act, @SenGianaris lays out what the bill would do, including:
✅bringing NY antitrust laws up to speed w/ federal laws
✅changing the nat'l standard to an abuse of dominance standard
✅addressing monopsony power & threats to workers
PANEL DISCUSSION STARTING SOON!

"There's a great history in this country as states serving as laboratories, stepping forward for providing solutions that can be exported to other states & eventually adopted throughout the country...I think it's time we step in and take a stand for workers + biz." —@SenGianaris
Kicking off our panel @AnnaForFlorida discusses how major corporations shape our politics on every level of govt.
Lack of attention on elections allows corporations to set the agenda w/ their $$$, which leads to officials putting the corps' wants & needs over their constituents.
"Amazon understands Chicago is the transportation district hub of the country...they're trying to take out FedEx, UPS, and the Post Office."
If state & local officials don't give @amazon their way, they threaten to leave and move elsewhere.
As @senpetersil puts it: "They helped created a crisis that is not just wealth extraction, but it's abusive. It's an unfair power dynamic that Amazon is holding over people."
"At the end of the day, we have to break them up. There is no way around it."
"There's both a power imbalance here and an information asymmetry here between the public, the corporations, and the folks in office." —@Pat_Garofalo
Corporations are able to negotiate behind closed doors for tax breaks and other incentives...even if they don't need it.
As @AnnaForFlorida explains, "This is a race to the bottom where corporations win and the rest of us lose."
.@AnnaForFlorida lays out why states need to band together and end corporate tax giveaways (cc: @EndtaxG).
"If we everyone just stopped playing this game, we could go back to investing in quality of life vs chasing these companies with public funds."
"While you may think you're getting a cheaper good from Amazon conveniently, the reality is that underneath the surface they are actually costing you and me money by using their monopoly power to control the price of things." —@AGKarlRacine
.@amazon says everything they do is for their consumers.
@AGKarlRacine sets the record straight: they aren't playing fairly and they are *actually* harming consumers.
.@AGKarlRacine explains that "when a market is competitive, businesses try to attract customers by cutting prices and increasing the quality of products & services."
"We are at an extraordinary moment in time right now, one that will decide whether or not our economy is able to function in a way that is fair & equitable and allows all to prosper & compete." —@AGKarlRacine

The @FTC today filed a revised suit providing detailed proof of @Facebook’s >60% market share + laying out the copy-acquire-kill strategy @Facebook has used to build this unprecedented and dangerous power.
THREAD 🧵👇
2/ This case represents today’s new-look @FTC jumping at a chance to right the commission’s previous wrongs.
It includes a strong Section 2 claim and clearly explains the anticompetitive nature of @Facebook acquisitions of @WhatsApp and @Instagram.
3/ Today’s news is therefore a huge and promising step toward restoring the promise of the American economy.
It shows the new leadership at @FTC is committed to pursuing economic fairness and meaningful competition, no matter how powerful the enemies it makes doing so.
Apparently it's not enough for Bezos' empire to trap actually-productive people in their exploitative business model -- they want to turn them into PR props too. cnbc.com/2021/08/18/ama…
.@amazon forces sellers to pay a host of fees if they want their products to be seen. But even that is no guarantee they’ll be able to fairly compete.
That's not investing in small biz, it's theft. Don’t just take our word for it, listen to a seller:
Here’s just one tactic @amazon uses: It forces sellers to pay to use @amazon’s logistics network if they want to reach customers — even if the sellers are better at handling logistics than @amazon is. thenation.com/article/politi…
Enforcing our antitrust laws will protect small businesses from being taken advantage of, lied to, and retaliated against by big corporations like … @amazon.
