Dr. Piotr Oglaza is giving an update to local media on the COVID-19 situation in the #ygk region.
I will be updating with relevant info below.
126 active cases with close to 500 close contacts the the health unit is following.
Oglaza says we have one of the highest case rates ever seen in KFLA, only seen back in the third wave.
Percent positivity is also one of the highest ever seen.
Over the past 30 days, rate of cases in unvaccinated populations is six times greater than the vaccinated population.
There are 5 cases in hospital, two people in ICU.
We have 7 active outbreaks with a cumulative 168 cases linked (some resolved)
Because of high vaccination rate, Oglaza calls this surge more of a tidal wave than a tsunami. Still, we need to go back to the basics like staying home when sick, washing our hands and wearing masks.
The majority of active cases do have close contacts.
Community spread is not yet something of concern, but they are monitoring these cases.
Comparing KFLA to Sudbury, which is going through shutdown measures, Oglaza says things are quite different here.
If there is a pattern of general spread, this might cause additional health measures. Right now, cases are being found in clusters which are being dealt with.
As for the outbreak at the Integrated Care Hub, Oglaza says they’re working on addressing clusters of cases among unvaccinated and vulnerable populations linked to the hub, but Other clusters were happening simultaneously. Not too many details given about that but I will ask
As for the Secrion 22 order at JAKK Tuesdays, Oglaza says they continue to violate the order, and enforcement is in the works and an update will be given.
Cases and clusters are occurring in private social settings that are impacting individuals who are not immunized, mostly private settings, no significant spread in premises following measures outlined by the province.
Oglaza is basically asking the community to batten down the hatches as the fourth wave hits, to go back to basics, and gave words of encouragement that we’ve been through this before and we can do it again.
Based on the local situation, if we continue to see cases appearing in clusters conducive to targeted interventions, shutdown measures will not be necessary. If the situation changes, that will be assessed.
The one population Oglaza said they are monitoring closely are people facing barriers accessing health care. He says teams are offering up more testing and immunizations to those communities.

I want thank all the people who came forward to tell their stories, some of which deal with possibly the worst and most traumatic moments of their lives.
As a journalist, telling stories like these is a great responsibility, and you just hope you can do them justice. #ygk
Secondly, I want to say local, investigative journalism can happen, but it takes resources.
I’m sure, like me, other #ygk journalists have wanted to dig deeper into many stories, but couldn't.
