The special thing about being a Swiftie is sharing this crazy, emotional, deeply personal obsession we have, with other people who GET IT. So I want to share my emotional impressions with you, as I listen to original RED for the last time. I put a lot into this don’t let it flop!
Tonight I’m driving home in the dark blasting original RED. @mscbrknhearts reminded me today that as excited as we are for #RedTaylorsVersion we’re also saying goodbye to an old friend and there’s sadness in that. Here’s my song by song goodbye to each track.
State of Grace. Wow. Perhaps my fav track 1. It grabs you with that driving beat and sends you soaring! For Swifties who want Taylor to do a rock album…Have you listened to SoG?!? As UP as this is, the acoustic version is heartbreakingly beautiful.
Red. Two tracks in and the energy of this album is already amazing. But something is happening. She’s looking back at an old love, with excitement but also loss. And I’m rocking out but also thinking….
Treacherous. The beat is still pedal to the metal, but we’re getting intense. Hope? Love? Danger? I, I, I…like it.
I Knew You We’re Trouble. Musically, this album is now officially a rocker. But lyrically, it’s officially a heartbreaker. You never loved me, or anyone, or anything!?! I’m transported to an old relationship and Taylor and I are both lying on the cold hard ground.
All Too Well. Here we are. Shivers at every line. I’m back in time. Dancing round the kitchen in the refrigerator light with the girl who broke me like a promise all those years ago. I was a crumpled up piece of paper. And there was a real scarf. How does Taylor know????
Ok it wasn’t a scarf. It was a tshirt she left behind. But it smelled like her, and innocence, like love, betrayal and heartbreak. It was long ago and I since found real love and happiness and rarely think about it. There’s no pain or hurt anymore. But there’s the memory of hurt.
22. From the depths we bop out and forget about the heartbreaks - thank goodness! When I hear “Who’s Taylor Swift anyway? Eww”I laugh. And then I cry. I don’t know why…Do you?
I Almost Do. It’s heartbreak time again, a real country song. Back when I was a crumpled up piece of paper this was my life. It took everything not to call her. Every time I didn’t, I almost did. Eventually it was ok. No longer love or hate, it became indifference. Thankfully.
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. This song always reminds me of my daughters, dancing in their room, jumping on their beds, laughing and singing this at the top of their lungs. It’s happy and funny and empowering, and a perfect pick me up after I Almost Do.
Stay Stay Stay. Taylor knew we needed to keep the happy energy going. It’s funny, charming, a giggle. For some reason it makes me think of shopping in a fancy department store at Christmas. I have no idea why.
The Last Time. My least favorite song on the album, because there’s less Taylor. But blasting it loud in the car in the dark, the poignancy breaks through. It’s powerful, and as I say goodbye to Original Red, I realize, this is The Last Time.
Holy Ground. The emotional roller coaster continues and up we go! I love this song so much, I want to dance like you were in this room. But I can’t. I’m driving a car.
Sad Beautiful Tragic. Was there ever a song title that told you EVERYTHING better than this? The roller coaster heads down, slowly, steadily, sadly, but safely.
The Lucky One. Taylor said Red is an album about a fractured person, but the album is not fractured. The emotional cadence of this album is genius. This song is musically upbeat, lyrically ironic, and provides balance to the emotional roller coaster we’ve been on.
Everything Has Changed. I never know if this song is sad, wistful, hopeful, or all of the above. By this time in the album I’ve laughed, cried, and I’m exhausted. So maybe the confusion is me, or maybe it’s intentional, I can’t tell. But Taylor’s voice is beautiful.
Starlight. Something’s changed again. It’s not about heartbreak or hope. We’ve gone in a new direction. It sounds like a precursor to 1989. But any pop song that dreams about having ten kids gets two thumbs up from me. Is this really about Robert and Ethel Kennedy?
Begin Again. What a closer. It takes all the powerful energy and wrenching emotions of the album, and just says calm down. It’s gonna be okay. What’s past is past and the future has hope and love. No matter what you’ve been through, you can begin again. Amen.
If you’ve gotten this far - THANK YOU! And thank you @taylorswift13 for the music you gave us 9 years ago and the music you are about to give us in just a few hours. Time to Begin Again.
