Most advice about getting started as a freelance writer is straight up WRONG.

❌Make a website
❌Get on all the freelancing sites
❌Have a vast portfolio
❌Work for free
❌Create a lead gen funnel

When I started, I had nothing - no website, no portfolio, & no funnel.
Got my first gig on Fiverr writing product descriptions for an eCommerce store.

He referred me to others with a similar need & I was in business.

Cut to now, I still don’t have a site, not active on any freelancing sites, & no lead gen funnel.

So here’s what to do instead:
✅ Use Ikigai to find out if writing is your calling

Everyone can write but not everyone should. Money shouldn't be the sole motivator.
✅ Find one freelancing site that works for you

I left Fiverr because I wasn’t happy with the 20% cut they took. There are a LOT of great sites that you can use -

@contra (No commission)
@MarketerHire
Marketpool UK
@Pepper_Content
@contentflyco
✅ Join a community

Looking to grow and find gigs?

Highly recommend:

✅ Write samples and ask for feedback

Ask your friends, family, or better yet - your newfound writing community!

Publish your work on Medium. Then, use @contently to curate your portfolio.
✅ Your samples exist so you DON’T have to work for free

It’s going to feel odd to turn down work but don’t write an unpaid sample. You need to value your time from the get go.

Want to hone your skills? Find a mentor. Work for them for free in exchange for their mentorship.
✅ Show up consistently on ONE platform

Lead generation is great but it requires a lot of effort. Instead, start showing up consistently on one platform.

LinkedIn and Twitter are perfect.

P.S. Twitter is especially great if you want to practice copywriting.
BONUS

✅ Focus on becoming a little better every day

Follow writers that inspire you. Read as much as you can. Invest in yourself through courses.
This year, two things helped me become a better writer.

-> Devouring the @AnimalzCo blog
-> Attending the @netcapglobal’s (NC) Writing Fellowship

The next cohort starts on Nov 26 and NC has been kind enough to give me a 20% off the fellowship. So if you’re interested, HMU :)
BTW, I started a small email thread of freelancers where I pass on leads. No spam. DM me to join!
