The results of the @IATSE vote on their Basic Agreement and Area Standards Agreement have arrived. They have passed, but only by the most tenuous of margins (and the even more tenuous systems of their electoral college.)
Based on the popular vote alone, the Basic Agreement was actually narrowly voted down in the popular vote, with 49.6 percent voting “yes” and 50.4 percent voting “no”. There is a lot to process with this result.
@IATSE, as a union, is clearly at an inflection point.
This was not a rousing mandate for this new contract. Working conditions in our industry are degrading at a rapid rate, and only through a militant labor movement can we truly challenge the bosses and fight for workers rights.
The reality is this: if we want an @IATSE that is willing to go on strike and fight for truly equitable contracts, we’re going to have to put in the work organizing with and electing like-minded comrades throughout each and every local.
It is crucial that all workers in this industry get involved with this fight. We must build power for working class folks across this industry and beyond. We need everybody fighting in solidarity with each other. That includes you.
Whether you’re in @IATSE, other local unions like @WGAWest or @sagaftra, or in non-unionized positions like assistants or VFX departments – if you work to live, you need to be organizing. We need you with us.
We have a great opportunity for you to get involved and learn how we’re going to do that. We have our November General Meeting scheduled this Saturday, November 20th, at 11AM PST, and you are invited.
We will spend plenty of time processing this vote, and hear from @IATSE rank-and-file members to start charting our next steps. We also want to hear from you – no matter how you contribute to this industry – because we are all in solidarity together.
