NEW: An “Academy” for state lawmakers on voter suppression strategies run by ALEC in July featured a veritable who’s who of the right-wing leaders behind this year’s disinformation campaign about voter fraud & assaults on voting rights across the country.

ALEC did all that it could to keep this meeting secret from only inviting a select number of its state lawmaker members to attend, to passing out zip drives with materials in hopes materials wouldn’t be subject to open record laws.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita (R) gave the keynote address. A proponent of Trump’s Big Lie that the election was stolen, Rokita recently testified in front of the U.S. Senate against strengthening the federal Voting Rights Act.

Most of the Academy sessions focused on legislation, giving legislators a chance to discuss bills to restrict voting that have already been introduced and passed in their states this year and hear from Republican-aligned leaders about what more they think needs to be done.

HEP’s Jason Snead, Heritage's Jessica Anderson & Hans von Spakovsky, MAGA voter suppression executive director Ken Blackwell, Trump legal advisor Cleta Mitchell, Secretaries of State from TN, KY, & WV, and chair of the US Election Assistance Commission Don Palmer were speakers.

Blackwell’s MAGA voter suppression center recently published this document which includes many state models for lawmakers looking to the suppress the vote.
