The mudslide on Highway 99 in British Columbia has killed multiple people and emergency crews are still searching the debris field south of Lillooet.

“We’re hopeful to find people alive. But obviously that diminishes with time,” said David MacKenzie, the Pemberton District Search and Rescue manager.

Emergency officials in Abbotsford, B.C., also announced a new evacuation order Tuesday affecting about 1,100 people in a rural area known as Sumas Prairie, just north of the U.S. border.

First fire, now floods: B.C.'s climate-change-fuelled extreme weather events are connected.

With intense heat comes wildfires – and with wildfires come changes to the soil and vegetation that can exacerbate the effects of heavy rainfall.

Bridges were washed out, and highways were cut off by multiple mudslides and flooding. Stranded motorists were evacuated by helicopter. At least one person has died.

It’s all because of heavy rainfall from a phenomenon known as an “atmospheric river.”

What is an atmospheric river?

It is an intense and narrow band of moisture-laden air commonly associated with mid-pressure cyclones that bring heat and moisture from the tropics to the poles.

Anyone who wants to drink their cannabis can now choose between THC-infused beverages in cans, bottles, powders and tea bags.

The reason for this surfeit is that drinks were, at one point in time, expected to be the future of cannabis. So what happened?

Despite the industry’s enthusiasm, sales of the beverages have lagged expectations – leading some observers to say that the category’s potential was exaggerated.

tgam.ca/3n7YgGX
Maracle received many awards and honours in her lifetime, including the Order of Canada. But perhaps the greatest recognition lies in the words peers and admirers in the literary community had for Maracle on Thursday upon learning of her death.
