What we have learnt from Emma Barnett's interview with Nancy Kelley is that she contradicts her own views and beliefs constantly and her thinking is completely inconsistent.
This is what Nancy had to say:
On impartiality:
Nancy: the BBC needs to be impartial on all issues. Particularly news. But being part of Workplace policy doesn't have a real affect on impartiality.
Also Nancy: We would love to have more influence on how the BBC covers LGBTQ
More on impartiality:
Nancy: We support people on inclusion and in a completely separate team we engage with officials and politicians.
Also Nancy: we want progressive change. That is what we do
On language:
Nancy: We want an inclusive outcome. Focusing on language is not the way to do that.
Also Nancy: you should talk about "pregnant women and other pregnant people", or use gender neutral language in policy documents
On the reality of sex:
Emma: Do you believe a person can change their biological sex?
Nancy: No
Also Nancy: I believe trans women are women.
Emma: Do you believe that literally or metaphorically?
Nancy: literally
On free speech:
Nancy: everyone should be able to learn and work in an environment where people are free from harassment and abuse
Also Nancy: Trans students raised perceptions of whether they felt safe…. I don’t know if Kathleen Stock should have been fired.
On transphobia:
Nancy: many refuges run on a trans inclusive basis and some don't. It’s important that everyone can access a service.
Also Nancy: to say that there is a need for trans exclusive refuges in the abstract is transphobic
So to clarify her position on transphobia:
Emma: is JK Rowling transphobic?
Nancy: I have no idea. I have never met her.
Emma: is Kathleen Stock a transphobe?
Nancy: I have no idea. I have never met her.
