Thread. I joined the San Diego SPJ board to try to get journalists to join forces against what Facebook was doing to our industry in 2018. I discovered instead that SPJ's national board (which is heavy with San Diego people) is taking money from Facebook, and has been for years.
When I brought up my concerns about Facebook and its influence on journalism, my fellow board members laughed like I had made an especially funny joke. "Find us alternative ways to get money then if you're so smart," was pretty much the attitude I was met with.
I am no longer an SPJ member.
It's too bad, because there are many good things about it and other journalism groups. But I cannot support that sort of willful blindness toward corruption.

What's especially great about this video is that because they are always so inauthentic anyway it's impossible to tell whether this is a poorly acted bit
Yep! I can no longer remember this guy's name but I can tell you that during a brief stay in San Diego he did try to stick his gross and much older than me tongue in my mouth when I was just a lil wee one going by "Producer Brooke" at the rock radio cluster in 97 or so
Which is setting the stage for the far right to steal all future elections and accuse Democrats of any number of weaponized and outlandish things to befuddle reporters and cover their tracks. It's obvious by now, no?
Step 1: Flood social media with astroturfed bullshit
Step 2: Tap a few dozen useful idiots to show up at events and harass Dems
Step 3: Harass journos who accurately report facts by accusing them of political bias and worse
Step 4: Wildly accuse everyone else of what you're doing
So the tactics you can identify here are: Firehosing, Gaslighting, and Distraction. There's a fourth disinfo tactic that's starting in again today, which is Disheartenment ("it's too late to do anything.") Don't listen to those assholes, either.
You all ready to acknowledge the role of disinformation in swaying elections yet?
For those of you thinking you're informing me that the media was in on it, this tweet is actually intended for the people who have the nerve to call themselves my colleagues in journalism and who repeatedly keep shitting the bed when disinformation campaigns present themselves
(And blocking me when I call them out, not that I blame them for that, I am fully aware I have a terrible personality and do not give a fuck any more)
