1. This Thanksgiving 🦃, Americans should be grateful for a free press. 📰

But they should be equally concerned they do not have an independent press.

The difference is huge. 🧵
2. The concept of freedom of the press is a fundamental right, baked into the First Amendment.
3. Without freedom of the press, there is no such thing as freedom of speech – as evidenced by dictatorships like China.
4. Freedom of press implies freedom from threat of government interference.

That threat in the US has, for now, been minimized. But one just as great has arisen.
5. The threat of undue influence – corporate, ideological, & foreign – is just as dangerous.

It jeopardizes the other core value of a democratic press: independence.
6. For a press to be truly democratic, it must be free *and* independent. This is where America's news media is failing.
7. This Thanksgiving, be thankful America has a free press. But be aware that our media must regain its independence.

Today I'm dethroning it. 🧵 👇
2. In 1996, @BillGates crowned content king in a @microsoft blog post.

"Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the Internet, just as it was in broadcasting," Gates wrote.

3. Gates postulated that the internet, via micropayments, would allow "content providers" to be paid for single pieces of content.

A single content provider could be paid for a single, unique piece of content.

This never happened.
