🍎 Earlier this month, @HipCityReg led a workshop on the need for web3 to expand its cultural reference points.

How do we learn from our favorite person’s teacher?
How do their inputs influence what we create?

Here are the highlights 👇
We started off with this concept:

There is no single moment in time. Gen-Zs in LA are dressing as if it's 2003.

Algorithmic feeds have seeped into the real world; what it means for creativity and reference points is limitless.
A multi-hyphenate, Reggie is a designer, writer and...

- Founder and CEO of @eternaltilidie; prev Rough Draft Ventures, JUMP and Dreams
- Grew up in the Poconos; currently lives in Brooklyn
- Undergrad at Wharton/UPenn
- Kanye stan

We are in a constant search of wells (of inspiration).

But have we all crowded at the same source? Are we not covering as much land as we should be?

As @tylerthecreator says, "it's all reference points" 📍

An example of someone whose work and influence touch upon multiple cultural reference points:

Demna Gvasalia, the cofounder of Vetements; current creative director at @BALENCIAGA; creative director of the DONDA Album Release Event.
Why is this important?

If we fail to hold an understanding of cultural references (both in the immediate present and everything beforehand), we could lose sight of the chain that we're existing on.

which begs the question -> What basis are we even building on?
Expressing the present

The work of @DenimTears, @niallashley_, @JoshuaCitarella, @humangallardo, @nicolemclovin are deeply reflective of the present.

But @Meta, on the other hand, is anti-present.
The nature of the remix, the sample and add-on.

It’s our job to find references that “re-unlock” the values we are trying to embody in the present.

Lose yourself in the inputs of your reference. Let "the inputs of your inputs" enrich what you create in the world.
Immediate fears of crypto → things that are already distant to most people

💰 Financialisation - "I don't even know finance that well and now I have to learn about DeFi?"

🖼️ Art - status or identity exploration - only a small subset of people are in the art market
Secondly, the narrative sources of crypto are driven by fear. The lack of trust in systems and the fear of economic collapse.

Even the literature we return to is dark literature: William Gibson's Neuromancer or Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.

It's not bright.
If we root ourselves in fear, darkness and alienation, web3 will face the same struggles as we do today in the sense that we're not speaking to real problems.

We need better, stronger narratives about systems and how these tools should and can solve for systemic problems.
If crypto doesn't care to find new wells, we'll all stay thirsty. We need to seek more divergent inspiration to achieve scale.
On financialization of web3 (1/2)

The bad 👎

He's wary of compressing every interaction into a potential for compensation. We'll erode our capacity for hospitality. We need interactions with no expectations, but just for our presence and our shared humanity.
On financialization of web3 (2/2)

The good 👍

Cultural production (usually from marginalized communities) was never rewarded w what they deserved. NFTs are enabling anyone with creative potential to receive royalties. It has created material change in peoples' lives.
On "reference points in a composable environment like web3"

Social networks unlock more niches. @dhof's Loot project felt like dumping all the LEGOs in the middle of the playground. Anti-environment and perfect for maintaining reference.
On "light-based crypto narratives" (1/2) ☀️

The power of all this? The collective organizing without institutional barriers to create more open and fluid orgs. This is the unlock which returns us to influencing the physical world.
On "light-based crypto narratives" (2/2) ☀️

Crypto is an effective mechanism to bring ppl together. Much will only be solved by the collective. The Whole Earth Catalog is a reference in crypto for this reason.

The best thing in crypto? This insane and undeniable energy ⚡
tl;dr

- Expand our cultural reference points
- Define the bases that we're building on
- Financialization in web3 goes both ways, bad and good.
- There needs to better, more light-based crypto narratives
- We're in a collectivist movement right now

We worked with @HipCityReg (& @LucaRepola) to design custom NFT art for his talk:

5 editions of the B&W NFT available for 0.8 eth
15 editions of other NFTs available for 0.02 eth
All proceeds from NFT sales will be split equally between @HipCityReg and @CryptoSocietyS1.

We'll use proceeds to fund future programming, scholarships, & research.

We'll be eternally grateful your support :)
