This E.E. Cummings poem is for all the tender hearts out there on the inter webs today. Those who are separated from kin and friends—either by choice or by circumstance.

May the Divine reach out and touch those ever so tender and painful places. May your deepest longings be met
May love and affirmation gather from North/South/East/West and meet you at the intersection of your vulnerability. May the ground below your feet hold you firmly and gently. May the sky above you expand the horizon of new possibilities that sit just beyond this present moment.
May the clothes on your skin protect you from harsh elements of this present moment. May the people who know you—know how to love you well and offer you safe passage through the present. May they walk in lockstep—steadying you/carrying you/calling you forward to your New Day.
May you paint for yourself a picture of the Divine whispering gently in your ears—I carry your heart with me. I carry it in my heart. For you are the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life.

How do creativity/spirituality/psychology integrate in my life?

what do I mean by that?

I mean: I approach theology with the lens of a therapist. It’s an intervention
A container (not the only container) for self actualization—for deep relation to the Divine/Self/Neighbor
I approach theology with the lens of an artist. Theology is both “process oriented” and “practice focused”—“fluid/flexible” The “content” of one’s theology points outward to symbols/patterns AND takes us deep inward to something we can’t name without help from our theologies
It’s important to ask, what’s theology for?

It is not for self-aggrandizement or perpetuation of systems.

No one becomes a painter to save the profession of painting, or to build and self perpetuate communities of painters.

#FridayMotivation #Marriage

I sometimes get comments asking me when I’m going to marry my partner. This is a personal decision that I don’t *need* to answer, but I’m happy to share part of our logic/reasoning.

It will be a few years. And there are a few specific reasons.
I want to see my partner get out of debt before we marry.

That’s important to me and she’s agreed.

The second piece is that want her to have a small nest egg that is completely hers.

Power dynamics in marriage are important to me. And changing them in a positive direction.
Not that I ever would—but if I ever went off the rails and became toxic or abusive—I want her to have “walk-away” power with me.

Especially as a woman with a disability—I want her to have a few months savings that I don’t control and that aren’t part of our shared assets.

#MondayMotivation Money for Millennials. Dispelling Myths. Home Ownership Edition.

I know a lot of millennials. I work with a lot of millennials. And something I hear from a lot of you is that you'd prefer home ownership to investing because your parents lost a lot $$ in 2008.
But what you probably didn't know is that the house you personally live in is not an investment. If you live in a house for 30 yrs (which few people do) and pay 30 year mortgage and do normal but required maintenance--you will spend more on the house than it's worth over time.
People can get lucky in 3-5 yr cycles if they bought low and sell when the market is high like right now and where you don't have major repairs. literally everything in a house needs replaced over a 30yr cycle. Paint, walls, electrical, roofs, flooring, window, appliances etc.

#TuesdayThought sometimes people ask if coming out made me lose my faith temporarily.
My answer--No. When I came out I became aware that the container called "straight" was too small for who I am/how I love.
Likewise, my the container in my life called "faith" was too small
Losing things: faith, identity, etc... can be painful.
Surprisingly enough, expansion/growth can be a painful too. A quote that really sustained me is below
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ― Anaïs Nin
A lot of folks can admire the beauty of a flower in full bloom, but they may not appreciate the growth journey that flower took from seed, to a plant, to ripe bud, to a flower in full bloom that risked opening itself up for all the world to see it's full colors.

There are 2 economic truths happening at once & we need to talk abt both

1. housing/health/transportation/edu costs are rising at unsustainable rates

2. discretionary spending for Americans and our perception of normal/needed spending is unsustainable

money.cnn.com/2018/05/17/new…
1. Europe has a personal tax rate of 50%+ and I haven't looked at economic data to see if we could extrapolate it to the USA, but I certainly wld support it if it would shore up the social safety net

2. Europeans live a v. diff, > frugal and IMO preferred lifestyle to America
Key diff--more investment in public infrastructure and less need/dependency and therefore expense associated w/ private automobile ownership. For many ppl in the USA being car free+car insurance free, wld shake loose $400-$700 a month

Key diff--smaller homes & less stuff
