Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury appeared on radio station 680 The Fan tonight and not surprisingly was supportive of coach Geoff Collins despite a 9-24 record, effectively affirming he won't be fired. Excerpts of his comments follow:
“We knew it was going to be a tough season in the transition going from the triple option to a pro set. But when going through it, it’s painful and frustrating. It’s definitely a disappointing year and one that is quite frankly not acceptable.
“Coach Collins and his staff have done a great job recruiting and it looks like we’re lining up to have another great class. Geoff is doing exactly what he needs to build a roster that can compete in this league and compete at the highest level.
“We need to add more talented players. As we’ve gone through the season with the injuries, one of the things where we’ve been exposed is depth. Last week at Notre Dame it was pretty obvious."
(on if Stansbury has “his man”) “I have my man. Geoff Collins has created an incredible culture here. You can tell our kids are engaged. They’re not rolling over. They’re fighting to the last whistle and so many games this year we were either throwing into the end zone at the..
...end of the year to put it into overtime or win the game. I feel good about the kind of young men he’s recruiting. There are things we have to do and we’re going to do what it takes to get our program to where we expect it to be”
