On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, the UK’s Foreign Secretary Liz Truss chooses to publish an article, abdicating the UK’s historic responsibilities & commitments to international law. A thread:
To extol Israel as a liberal democracy that believes in “freedom and fairness,” as Liz Truss does, is quite simply an insult to all Palestinians whose lives, liberty and fortunes are under constant attack by Israel’s expansionist aggression.
Israel is a serial transgressor of international law as it refuses to end its 1967 occupation of Palestinian territory. In fact, it's consolidating that illegal occupation by building settlements in occupied territory. All the above are contrary to British law and British policy.
It was clear to all those that backed the peace process nearly three decades ago – including the UK – that Israel’s illegal settlement project was the main obstacle to resolution.
The inability or unwillingness by the international community to hold Israel to account for those settlements – and countless other transgressions of international law – is the single most important reason that process failed.
Israel’s impunity is not just a blow to the Palestinian people. It is making a mockery of the global rules-based order. The lesson for all tin-pot dictators and would-be expansionist autocrats is that rules only apply to those without powerful friends.
This is a clear attack against the international order that was erected at the end of World War II precisely to ensure that such horrors would never recur.
