50 years ago, Athens, GA, destroyed a thriving Black town — Linnentown — and forced dozens of Black families out of their homes. All to expand the University of Georgia.
Linnentown was a thriving Black neighborhood, full of plumbers, electricians, construction workers, beauticians and more. Most of the residents owned their own homes.
Residents were paid as little as $1,450 when the city forced them out and destroyed the town for UGA.
“I was about 14 years old when everything happened. Nobody understood because there were no meetings with the community ... It caused a lot of anguish. It caused a lot of hurt and disappointment," Hattie Thomas Whitehead, former Linnentown resident.
