Our internal Pulp Game Jam has ended, giving us six great games that push the limits of what we thought Pulp was capable of. Let's take a look.

Remember, Pulp is our browser-based game making tool, coming in January, an easy, approachable, fun way for anyone make Playdate games. A screenshot of the Pulp web interface. The main window is s
"Your Turn, Little Bot" is a map-explorer with a story, a crank-to-recharge mechanic, cutscenes, and lots of surprises along the way. It implements a “fog of war” where you uncover areas as you move — something we wouldn’t have even thought possible in PulpScript.
"Spout" is a plant-growing game with action-game obstacles (watch out for those timed spikes and traps!), a unique crank-to-power-player mechanic, and loads of room to explore. This feels like a BIG game, hardly limited by the scope of Pulp.
"Hotel Heartbreak" is a crank-centric elevator game with tremendous graphics and loads of charm. It’s simple and immediately understandable — a perfect arcade title.
"Pulp Game", based on the hit show Pulp Game 😉, is a story told through a bunch of cool minigames — any one of which could’ve made its own neat Pulp game! Most impressive feature: it has dozens of NPCs per screen (mostly using the emit function), which we thought was impossible.
"Scaredy Heart" is from the creator of Pulp itself, who has always said they wanted to make a classic RPG inside Pulp. It has loads of items, randomly set stats, characters, levels, dialog, and menus. The graphics are, as always, stellar.
"I Was Dead, But…" is mystery set at a seance held inside a haunted mansion… where you play as the ghost. Simple and, hopefully, entertaining!
It was exciting seeing what Jey, Laura, Jake, Ben, Dustin, Andrew, and David could make in such a short period of time. And thanks to Shaun and Neven for running the show — and making Pulp in the first place.

We can't wait to see what you make with it next year!

⭐️ Hey, how about a thread of third-party games being made for Playdate?
Side-loading a third-party game onto your Playdate is very simple. ① Login to your Playdate account at play.date, ② Go to the "Sideload" tab, ③ Drag and drop a .pdx or .zip.

It should download within an hour, or you can go to Settings > Games to download now. Image
First up is Bloom, the first "commercial" Playdate third-party game! Bloom is a narrative-driven social sim about starting up a flower shop, with gorgeous art and fantastic music. It's very special and deserves great success. $9.99, from @RNGParty. rngpartygames.itch.io/bloom

Hi! As you know, last month we released Pulp, our easy-to-use Playdate game making tool.

And today, as promised… it's time for even more developer news.

🌟 The full Playdate Software Development Kit is now available for free to all at play.date/dev/ !! 🌟

A thread!
The full Playdate SDK is for folks already comfortable with coding — but we've worked hard to make it as easy and approachable as we can. It gives you two choices of languages: Lua, for a higher-level scripting language experience, or C, for improved performance. A screenshot of the Playdat...
It's also packed with helpful functions for things like font handling, drawing, animation, sprites, tilemaps, collision detection, A* pathfinding, audio synthesis, crank handling (of course!), and really quite a lot more! A screenshot of the Playdat...

Hello.

We’ve been working non-stop to finish up Playdate, but in the meantime, we wanted to give you a small update on our Playdate Developer Preview.

It’s lots of fun news. A #playdatedev thread:
Over 250 people around the world now have actual Playdates in-hand. They’re putting our tools and tech to the test, building the world’s first third-party Playdate games.

Want a peek?

Rebecca (@veubeke) is working on this gorgeous dungeon crawler.
Oinariman (@oinariman) is crafting an incredible calligraphy tool that uses the crank to set the direction of your brush.

Introducing Playdate, a new handheld gaming system from Panic.

It fits in your pocket. It's got a black and white screen. It includes a season of brand-new games from amazing creators. Oh and… there's a crank???? play.date

Yes. A thread… A photo of the Playdate system.
Our company @panic has been around for a long-ass time, and we've made lots of great software. But one day we realized: we're self-funded, and there's nobody to tell us what to do. Why aren't we trying more new things? A photo of the Panic office at dusk.
So, we also started publishing video games. It's been fun and rewarding. First, Firewatch from @camposanto, and later this year, the joyful Untitled Goose Game from @house_house_. Firewatch screenshot.Untitled Goose Game screenshot.
