Schumer on supporting short-term funding gov't through February 18th to avert a gov't shutdown tomorrow at midnight: "This is a good compromise that allows an appropriate amount of time for both parties in both chambers to finish negotiations on appropriations."
Schumer: "If there is a shutdown, it will be a Republican anti-vaccine shutdown. Democrats wants to get the gov't funded as soon as possible. It was not easy to reach this deal. It took a while to get Republican leadership on board, but I'm glad that we've gotten it done."
Schumer on NDAA & Rubio:"Last night, because of the objections of one Republican, NDAA has once again been prevented from moving forward. As I said last night, the amdt pushed by my colleague would certainly raise a Blue Slip objection in the House and thus kill the entire NDAA."
Schumer just fast-tracked legislation by Oklahoma GOP Sen. Lakford to Senate calender to prohibit the Department of Defense from discharging or withholding pay or benefits from members of the National Guard based on COVID-19 vaccination status, for future floor debate and votes.
Lankford last night on Senate flr requested a vote on his Nat'l Guard pay/vaccination status amdt, objected to Armed Svcs Chair Reed:"Air Nat'l Guard mbrs, as of this wknd, will not be paid anymore, not be allowed to drill anymore,& we have thousands of them all over the country."
Lankford: "At the last check, the Guard had about 50 percent compliance on the vaccination...This coming weekend, Air National Guard members who were headed to drill who have not been vaccinated can't
drill."
House Rules Cmte is currently meeting on the former Trump DoJ official Jeffrey Clark criminal contempt of Congress resolution & the CR funding gov’t through Feb 18th, but will only issue a rule today on the short-term funding bill for House floor debate & votes later today.
Chair McGovern on Jeffrey Clark contempt of Congress resolution:”We are not going to report a rule on this measure today. Before we take this to the Flr,Select Cmte will give Mr Clark 1 more opportunity to do the right thing here & show up in person on Sat.And I hope he takes it.”
McGovern: “But make no mistake: if Mr. Clark does not comply on Saturday, this committee will be prepared to move forward with a vote on the House Floor holding him in contempt of Congress. This is not some witch-hunt.“
House today plans to take up a short-term CR to extend current federal funding past tomorrow's midnight deadline through February 18th to avert a gov't shutdown. CR was just released this morning. @cspan
House Approps Chair DeLauro on CR: "To build pressure for an omnibus, the CR includes virtually no changes to existing funding or policy (anomalies). However, Democrats prevailed in including $7 billion for Afghanistan evacuees."
DeLauro on CR new gov't funding deadline: "The end date is February 18. While I wish it were earlier, this agreement allows the appropriations process to move forward toward a final funding agreement which addresses the needs of the American people.”
McConnell paid tribute on Senate floor to Jean Rounds, the wife of SD GOP Senator Mike Rounds, who died yesterday of cancer: "Jean's bravery, Mike's devotion, and the loving care of their family in the face of a terrible illness made their inspiring example shine even brighter."
McConnell: "The Senate is united in our grief. We will continue hold our friend Mike and the entire Rounds family close in our thoughts and prayers in the difficult days ahead."
McConnell on the election results: "Last night was a difficult evening for Democrats. The Democratic Party has wildly misread their mandate and let the radical left run the country."
