On paper, the U.S. economy is booming right now: jobs are coming back fast, businesses are open, wages are increasing, and the stock market continues to hit records. Yet some Americans are struggling to come up with enough money to pay for goods, food, and services. #velshi
2/14
It feels like everything is more expensive. It all boils down to inflation: the rise in price of goods and services. The question isn’t whether we really have inflation - we do. But just how worried should we be? #velshi
3/14
The Biden Administration had been calling it “transitory” - in other words, short term. Not permanent. But measuring inflation during an unprecedented pandemic can be tricky. America has seen inflation before. Plenty of times, actually. #velshi
4/14
Each inflationary episode different from the last. This figure here –provided by the White House - shows us all the times in American history when inflation was 5-percent or higher. I’ll go through them quickly. #velshi
5/14
In 2008, heightened inflation was caused by skyrocketing gas prices. From 1989-1991, Iraq invaded Kuwait leading to the first Gulf War. Elevated uncertainty around the world meant crude oil prices shot up. #velshi
6/14
The US experienced its longest stretch of heightened inflation in the 1970’s because of an oil embargo implemented against the west by OPEC, & a decline in oil production caused by the Iranian revolution. These last 3 inflationary episodes - all caused by oil shocks. #velshi
7/14
So, we can’t really compare what’s happening today to these episodes because, while we are paying more at the pump, oil supply is not the root cause of 2021’s inflation woes. #velshi
8/14
Let’s go a little farther back, to 1969. prices jumped because the U-S economy was actually doing really, really well—increased demand for not enough goods. #velshi
9/14
1950 might be a yet better comparison - the start of the Korean War: America was coming out of a recession. And families were reminded of World War II - when rationing and supply shortages were the norm. So, families rushed to buy goods, and prices increased. #velshi
10/14
This sounds more like what was happening in 2020, at the start of the pandemic. Demand is still high due to Covid-19, we’re just not seeing all the hoarding right now. The very best comparison to what we’re seeing now is the post-World War II era. #velshi
11/14
In 1947 - inflation skyrocketed to over 20-percent - the highest it’s been in nearly 8 decades.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the rapid post-war inflationary episode was caused by the elimination of price controls, supply shortages, and pent-up demand. #velshi
12/14
Bingo. Or almost Bingo, since we didn’t have price controls before the pandemic. But we are seeing supply shortages and pent-up demand. Here’s the good news. The Great Inflation of 1947 lasted about two years. #velshi
13/14
Prices began to level out as domestic & foreign supply chains normalized & consumer demand stabilized. & that’s probably what’ll happen this time around. But inflation can be scary, esp. if you're old enough, like I am, to remember what real inflation feels like. #velshi
14/14
The Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, has already said this inflation period has lasted longer than expected. He’s also said it’s likely not transitory, or short term. But it will end. We just have to figure what to do to help it end sooner rather than later. #velshi

I want to tell you the story of Sarah Weddington. Sarah was born in 1945 in Abilene, Texas. Sarah always thought she’d grow up to teach high school students about the epic poem “Beowulf”. By the time she got to college, her aspirations had evolved. #velshi

Despite her college dean telling her law school would be too tough for a woman, she enrolled at the University of Texas Law School in 1964: one of 40 women in a class of 1,600. #velshi

Sarah Weddington recalls a building across from the law school, where women - and some men - would sit in little nooks, at desks rescued from the garbage, and work to preserve women’s rights. #velshi

I talk about democracy a lot on this show- ad nauseum, in fact. I happen to quite like it and I’m more than a little worried about it, in America, right now. The term “democracy” quite literally means “rule by the people”. #velshi
2/16
A system of government determined by the people and for the people. While it has never quite perfected it, the United States of America was a hallmark of democracy since the ink dried on the Constitution in 1787. #velshi

Things have largely improved since then: The civil war gave black men the vote. The suffrage movement gave women the vote, and the civil rights movement made voting fairer and more accessible to all. #velshi

I’m a big fan of American immigration. In fact, I’m a product of American immigration. So, when I think of Thanksgiving, other than getting sleepy from all the food, I remember that there would be no Thanksgiving if not for immigration. #velshi

Those first pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth Rock 400 years ago were grateful for the bounty of a new land in which they had arrived- and the inhabitants of that land- in this case the Wampanoag Tribe - who welcomed them, and without who’s help, they’d have starved. #velshi
3/16
In hindsight, those first immigrants maybe weren’t the best model, given the genocide and land theft that soon followed. But it’s a fact that America wouldn’t be what it is today if not for immigration. #velshi

Officials in California are investigating another potential oil spill off the coast of Huntington Beach. A sheen was spotted on the water near the pipeline that was ruptured back in October by the anchor of a cargo ship. 26,000 gallons of oil spilled into the ocean. #velshi

Accidental oil spills are a danger inherent to offshore drilling. Offshore drilling is a lot of things - it's extremely lucrative, and extremely dangerous to the environment. But it continues unabated and we are about to see a lot more of it. #velshi

Last week, 80 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico were placed on the auction block, just like rare antiques or a coveted piece of art. Except, the buyers won’t handle their sacred assets with care. Quite the opposite actually. #velshi

Today is President Biden’s 79th birthday - making him the oldest sitting President in American history. And, for a man his age, he’s got a pretty good bill of health. #velshi
2/19
We know this because President Biden went for a physical yesterday and his doctor released a very detailed, very honest summary of the President’s health. #velshi
3/19
It reads exactly as you’d expect a health report to read. Lots of medical jargon, but easy enough to understand if you don’t have a medical degree. It’s incredibly transparent: Joe Biden is not in perfect shape, but he’s everything you’d expect a 79 yr old man to be. #velshi

The words inscribed at the base of the greatest symbol of America to the world - the Statue Of Liberty - are about immigration. A beacon of freedom to a world whose people America desperately needed. #velshi

Millions of people crossed oceans - first forcible, then voluntarily, to make this country into the great world power it would become. It’s possible your grandparents, or not-too-distant ancestors, made that brave journey to America back then. #velshi
