Seeing some #XPN2021 chatter about which albums belong to which generations; thought I'd provide some context!
Daniel Levitin explains in This Is Your Brain On Music (2006) that we are primed to latch onto tunes we love between ages 13-25 (puberty til our brains finish forming).
I'm rounding numbers and of course there's overlap here, but that means if Boomers were born between ~1946-1964, then they get most nostalgic hearing songs/albums/artists that were big between ~1960-1979.
Gen X (born 1965-1980) have a soft spot for music from 1980-1995
Millennials (born 1981-1996) love music released from 1996-2010 the most.
The oldest members of Gen Z are now turning 25 (!!) and started forming what will be their strongest emotional bonds with music in 2011. Music being released *now* belongs to them!
Gen Alpha starts turning 13 around 2025. We'll see if nostalgia is even still a thing (thanks, rapidly evolving technology!) by the time they're old enough to feel it. #XPN2021
